LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball head coach Stew Morrill announced Monday an update on a pair of players who suffered injuries in the Aggies' game at New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan. 17.
Junior guard Preston Medlin (Carrollton, Texas) will be out 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist, while senior forward Kyisean Reed (Palmdale, Calif.) is out with a season-ending torn ACL in his knee. Both injuries occurred in the second half against NMSU.
"First and foremost is our concern for Kyisean and Preston. This is as tough as it gets and we hurt for them first and our team second," Morrill said. "We expect our players to step up and compete, as we have a lot of season left."
Medlin is currently averaging 16.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He is shooting 47.4 percent (82-of-173) from the field, including 39.3 percent (33-of-84) from three-point range and 81.8 percent (63-of-77) at the free throw line. Medlin is currently fourth in the WAC overall in scoring (16.3 ppg), while leading the league in conference only games (20.7 ppg). In three-point field goal percentage, Medlin is seventh in overall games (.393) and 14th in league only games (.395), as well as sixth in overall three-pointers made per game (2.06) and second in WAC only games (2.83). Medlin also leads the conference in minutes played both overall (36.06) and league only games (37.67).
Reed is averaging 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.6 steals per game. He is netting a team-high 58.2 percent (71-of-122) field goal shooting, as well as 66.2 percent (51-of-77) at the free throw line. Reed is 14th in the WAC in scoring both overall (12.1 ppg) and league games (11.3), while ranking 10th in overall rebounding (6.5 rpg) and tied for 11th in league only games (6.0). He also ranks second in overall field goal percentage (.582) while ranking fourth in league games (.553). Reed is sixth in the WAC in blocked shots both overall (1.75) and conference only games (1.67), as well as seventh in steals for both overall (1.63) and league games (1.5).
Utah State is 14-3 overall and 5-2 in Western Athletic Conference action and returns home to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum to host UT Arlington (8-8, 3-4 WAC) on Thursday, Jan. 24 and Louisiana Tech (16-3, 7-0 WAC) on Saturday, Jan. 26. Both games tip-off at 7 p.m. (MT).
