Tyler Newbold Earns Academic All-District Honors

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball player Tyler Newbold has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII first team it was announced Thursday.

Newbold joins Luke Babbit (Nevada), Kurt Cunningham (Boise State) and Nedeljko Golubovic (Fresno State) as the only players from the Western Athletic Conference to earn academic all-district honors.

Newbold, who has twice earned academic all-WAC honors, was also the only player from the state of Utah recognized.

Newbold, a 6-4, 210-pound junior guard from Payson, Utah (Payson HS), has a cumulative 3.46 grade-point average in journalism. On the season, he is averaging 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 44.1 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from three-point range and 85.2 percent at the free throw line.

The academic all-district team was selected by members of CoSIDA from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia. Academic nominees must be at least a sophomore academically, contribute as a starter or significant reserve and maintain at least a 3.30 overall grade point average.

Newbold will now be placed on the national ballot with the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team being announced later this season.
