MW Championship Bracket

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men’s basketball will enter the Mountain West Men’s Basketball Championship as the No. 8 seed, facing No. 9-seeded San José State on Wednesday, March 8, at Noon (MT) in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The game will mark the second consecutive 8/9 game that Utah State has played and the highest tournament seeding that the Spartans have earned since joining the Mountain West.

Utah State posted an 81-75 victory over the Spartans in the only meeting between the two teams this season in San Jose on Feb. 22. Freshmen guards Koby McEwen and Sam Merrill each surpassed 20 points in the game, logging 23 and 22, respectively, marking the first time in school history that a pair of freshmen scored 20 or more points in the same game. Utah State leads the all-time series 58-21 and has won each of the last 19 contests and 25 of the last 26.

Utah State and San José State have squared off in the conference tournament nine times in the series with the Aggies leading conference tournament games, 5-4. USU has won each of the last three conference tournament games, including a 58-54 victory in the most recent meeting on March 11, 2011.

In last season’s 8/9 game, Utah State posted an 88-70 victory over Wyoming as then junior guard Shane Rector scored a career-high 24 points. Senior guard Chris Smith added 20 points, junior wing Jalen Moore added 19 points and sophomore guard Julion Pearre rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14.

Overall, Utah State has appeared in the 8/9 game of the Mountain West Championships three times, posting a 2-0 record with its victory over Wyoming last season, and a 73-69 victory over Colorado State in its first tournament appearance.

Utah State will play No. 1-seeded Nevada with a victory, facing the Wolf Pack on Thursday, March 9 at 1 p.m. (MT). The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals on Friday, March 10 at 7 p.m. (MT), with the Championship game set for Saturday, March 11 at 4 p.m. (MT).
