Preston Medlin Named Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball player Preston Medlin has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 25, an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

It is the fourth time in his career that Medlin has received USU student-athlete of the week honors.

Medlin, a 6-4 sophomore shooting guard from Carrollton, Texas (Hebron HS) helped Utah State to a pair of home wins in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament last week against Loyola Marymount (77-69) and Oakland (105-81).

Medlin began the week with 26 points, eight rebounds and three assists against the Lions as he was 5-of-13 from the field, 3-of-8 from three-point range and 13-of-14 from the free throw line to set a new USU postseason record. He then added 26 points and a career-high tying nine rebounds to go along with three assists against the Grizzlies as he was 9-of-13 from the field, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.

For the week, Medlin averaged 26.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, while shooting 53.8 percent from the field (14-26), 53.8 percent from three-point range (7-13) and 89.5 percent at the free throw line (17-19).

On the season, Medlin ranks second in the WAC and 12th in the nation in three-point shooting (.435), third in the WAC and 74th in the nation scoring (17.1), fourth in the WAC in free throw shooting (.801), seventh in the WAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.68), ninth in the WAC in assists (3.36), and 10th in the WAC and 74th in the nation in overall shooting (.499).

Utah State (21-15) will conclude action in its 13th-straight postseason as it hosts Mercer (26-11) in the championship game of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. Overall, this is USU's 30th postseason appearance in school history. The game against MU will be televised live nationally on Fox College Sports (Comcast Ch. 263, DirecTV Ch. 623) with Dave Baker (play-by-play), Kyle Macy (analyst) and Dave Callaway (reporter) calling the action.

MEN'S GOLF - Sophomore Tanner Higham (Shelley, Idaho) helped Utah State to a fifth-place finish at the Cal Poly hosted Lamkin Grip Match Play Challenge last week as it lost to Fresno State (5.0-0.0), defeated Cal Poly's B Team (3.5-1.5) and then Towson (3.0-2.0) to win the consolation bracket. Higham won two of his three matches during the tournament as USU's No. 1 player with a 5&4 win against Cal Poly's Booker Senatore and a 3&2 win against Towson's Matt Fry to go along with his 4&3 loss against Fresno State's Brian Sunker.

GYMNASTICS - Freshman Sarah Landes (Edmond, Okla.) earned a pair of all-WAC honors last weekend in helping Utah State to a fifth-place finish in the WAC Championships with a 194.775, the Aggies' second-highest score of the season and their second-best mark in a WAC Championships meet. Landes collected first-team honors by tying for second on floor with a season-best 9.875, the highest score on floor for the Aggies this year. She also earned second-team all-conference accolades in the all-around, finishing sixth with a 39.125, adding a 9.775 on bars (T12th), a 9.750 on vault (T12th) and a 9.725 on beam (T16th).

SOFTBALL - Junior starting pitcher Mandy Harmon (Las Vegas, Nev.) tossed a complete game shutout in Utah State's 4-0 win at Louisiana Tech in both team's WAC opener last weekend. In the first game of the three-game series, Harmon fanned six, while allowing only five hits to the 33 batters she faced. For the weekend, Harmon posted a 1-1 record with a 2.69 ERA as she struck out eight batters while allowing 11 hits in the weekend series as USU dropped the final two games by scores of 10-1 (5) and 5-1.

MEN'S TENNIS - Junior Sven Poslusny (Lorrach, Germany) lost both of his matches last week as Utah State fell to 73rd-ranked Alabama-Birmingham, 7-0. In singles play, Poslusny lost in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 4-6), and he teamed with freshman Marcus Fritz for an 8-7 loss at the first doubles position.

WOMEN'S TENNIS - Freshman McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) won all four of her matches last week in helping Utah State to a 1-1 record with a 6-1 WAC win against Louisiana Tech and a 4-3 loss to San Francisco. Against USF, Davis posted a straight sets win at No. 2 singles (7-6, 6-3) and teamed with junior Jaci West for an 8-3 victory at the first doubles position. Against LTU, Davis notched a straight sets win at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-2) and teamed with West for an 8-3 win at the first doubles position.

MEN'S TRACK - Sophomore Kyle McKenna (Farmington, Utah) won the 5,000m with a time of 14:42.53 at UC Irvine's Spring Break Collegiate Invitational last weekend. With the time, McKenna leads the WAC in the event.

WOMEN'S TRACK - Senior Spela Hus (Celje, Slovenia) won the shot put with a toss of 14.63m (48-00.00) at UC Irvine's Spring Break Collegiate Invitational last weekend.
