LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s basketball recognized their own at its annual end-of-year banquet held on Tuesday night.
The evening began with a highlight video of the 2016-17 season, followed by the awarding of letters and then certificates for the America First Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week.
The first team award, voted upon by members of the squad, was Most Inspirational, with sophomore forward Quinn Taylor earning the honor. Taylor was tested for a heart condition late in the year, but appeared in every game for the Aggies during the season. Taylor averaged 5.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and finished second on the team with 46 total offensive rebounds on the year.
Freshman guard Sam Merrill was named the Best Defensive Player by his teammates, tying for the team lead with 29 steals. Merrill’s best defensive showing came against Nevada on Feb. 1, where he held MW-leading scorer Marcus Marshall to just two points on 1-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Merrill joined senior wings Jalen Moore and Connor Garner with the Best Represents Aggie Basketball Award, recognizing those on the team that showcase the best of Aggie basketball on the court, in the classroom and on the road.
Moore was also named the Team MVP after leading the Aggies with 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. It was the third year that Moore has led the team in scoring and rebounding, joining Greg Grant (1982-84, 1985-86) and Marvin Roberts (1968-71) as the only players in Utah State history with that distinction.
Moore, Garner and senior guard Shane Rector were honored one last time to complete the evening for their contributions to Utah State basketball over the course of their careers.
