LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball head coach Stew Morrill announced Wednesday that high school standout Elston Jones has signed with USU for the 2014-15 season.
Jones is a 6-9 center from Goodyear, Ariz., where he was a four-year letterwinner at Millenium High School. He only played in seven games due to injury in his senior season, but was an honorable mention all-state selection and an all-region honoree as a junior and was a Top 10 Arizona award winner.
"We are very excited about Elston joining our program. We are getting a quality young man from a great family, who has all the tools to be successful at the Division I level," Morrill said. "Elston is a versatile big man who can score at the block, face up on the perimeter and has excellent passing skills. He knows how important size players are in our system and wants to be coached to reach his potential."
Jones averaged 14 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks per game during his career at Millenium HS, posting 17 double-doubles and three triple-doubles during his junior season in helping the Tigers reach the Elite 8 of the Arizona 5A Division I State Tournament. As a freshman, he was a first-team all-Freshman Division I award winner. Jones was named to the first-team of the Dan Marjle Desert Classic, as well as a first-team honoree at the Hobbs Holiday Tournament. He was invited to the All-Academic All-Star Game and the Pangos All-American Camp.
Elston Jones, Jr., is the son of Sharon and Elston Jones, Sr., and intends on majoring in communication studies at USU.
Utah State ended the 2013-14 season with an 18-14 overall and a 7-11 Mountain West record in USU's first season in the league. The seven conference wins were the most of any of the five newest teams to the league in their first season, topping Boise State's three wins in its first season in the league in 2011-12, as well as Fresno State's five wins and Nevada's three wins in their first seasons of 2012-13, along with San José State's one win this season.
