Men's Basketball Announces 2001-02 Schedule

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State University's head basketball coach Stew Morrill announced today the upcoming schedule for the defending back-to-back Big West Conference Tournament Champions, which has compiled a 56-12 record over the past two seasons including a 36-3 mark in league play and the school's first NCAA Tournament win in 31 years this past year.

"Because of our recent success it has been interesting trying to convince teams to play us in Logan," commented Morrill, "and yet I believe the schedule worked out very well with a relatively inexperienced team we will have next year."

Utah State will play a total of 29 games on the season which includes two exhibition games, nine non-conference tilts and 18 league encounters. As was the case last year, the Aggies will have 17 games at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, a venue where USU has won 23 straight games which is the fourth-longest home court winning streak in the country.

For the second straight season, the Big West Conference has undergone a face-lift of sorts with the departure of Boise State to the Western Athletic Conference and the addition of UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge. The Highlanders were an independent last season after making the jump from Division II, while the Matadors won the Big Sky Conference Tournament in 2001 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

"Without question, the Big West Conference has improved in the last couple of years and that will present a tremendous challenge for us with all the new people making their first go-around at the Division I level," Morrill added. "Playing 18 league games this year with the addition of UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge creates a situation where we are playing league games in December and only nine preseason games as compared to 11 in the past.

"Also, the in-state games are always of great interest and something we certainly point towards. With the teams coming to our holiday tournament and various other games, our preseason schedule will certainly prepare us for league play."

Along with an always challenging league schedule, Utah State will travel to in-state rivals Utah and Weber State and host Brigham Young. The Aggies will also host Idaho State, Birmingham Southern and Centenary in the eighth annual Gossner Foods Classic on Dec. 28-29.

The 2002 Big West Conference Tournament will once again be held in Anaheim, Calif. from Mar. 7-9 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held on Mar. 14-17.
