LOGAN, Utah - Former Utah State men’s basketball player Spencer Butterfield has been named to the Utah Jazz Summer League roster for the second year in a row and will appear with the team in games in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, Nev.
Butterfield appeared in eight games with the Jazz last summer, averaging more than 18 minutes a game and scoring 8.7 points per outing. Butterfield shot 48.0 percent (24-of-50) over the eight games and averaged 3.9 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.4 blocks and 0.2 steals per game.
Last season, Butterfield played with JSF Nanterre, a club in France’s top division, and finished second on the team with 12.1 points per game. In all, Butterfield appeared in 33 games during the regular season and 20 games during the FIBA Europe Cup, guiding the team to a 25-11 club mark and a 14-5 ledger in Europe Cup play. In club play, Butterfield shot 50.0 percent (82-of-164) from the floor, 40.7 percent (61-of-150) from behind the 3-point line and 79.7 percent (51-of-64) at the free throw line. Additionally, Butterfield finished third on the team in club play with 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
During FIBA Europe Cup action, Butterfield averaged 13.7 points per game and shot 45.6 percent (47-of-103) from the floor, 52.9 percent (54-of-102) from behind the 3-point line and 81.0 percent (17-of-21) at the free throw line. Butterfield tied a FIBA record in a game against Muratbey Usak Sportif, scoring 39 points behind a record-setting 11 3-point shots during the game.
Butterfield finished his career as one of the top 3-point marksmen in Utah State school history, shooting 44.7 percent from long range over two seasons with the Aggies. Butterfield led USU in scoring as a senior, averaging 12.9 points per game and shooting 46.4 percent (141-of-305) from the field and a team- and Mountain West-best 46.0 percent (69-of-150) from behind the 3-point line. Butterfield also led the team defensively, totaling 19 steals and finishing third on the team with 10 blocks en route to earning honorable mention all-Mountain West honors.
Butterfield made an immediate impact with the Aggies as a junior, following a transfer from Yuba College, when he finished third on the team with 12.2 points per game and second on the team with 6.6 rebounds per contest. That year, Butterfield shot just under 50 percent from the floor (.498), including a team-best 42.5 percent (48-of-113) from behind the 3-point line and earned second-team all-WAC honors and was named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team.
The Jazz will play three games in the 2017 Utah Jazz Summer League on July 3, 5 and 6, with all of the games set to tip at 7 p.m. In addition to Monday’s game vs. the San Antonio Spurs, the Jazz are also scheduled to face the Philadelphia 76ers on July 5, and the Boston Celtics on July 7. All of the games are scheduled to be played at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Following the Utah Jazz Summer League, the team will head to Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League, which begins on July 7.
The 11-day, 67-game Summer League in Las Vegas tips off on Friday, July 7, and continues through Monday, July 17, at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion. A record 24 NBA teams will participate in a tournament-style format that culminates with a championship game on July 17 at 8 p.m. MT. Teams will play three preliminary games between July 7-11 before being seeded in a tournament that starts on July 12 and concludes with the championship game on Monday, July 17. Each team will play a minimum of five games in Las Vegas.
