LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men’s basketball played its first official scrimmage of the year on Saturday morning and senior guard Shane Rector showed his versatility, leading the scrimmage with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. The morning included three, 12-minute sessions.
Rector shot 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the floor and 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line en route to his 18 points. He was joined in double figures by four more, as junior guard Julion Pearre recorded 16 points, freshman guard Koby McEwen and senior wing Jalen Moore added 14 apiece and freshman wing Daron Henson scored 12.
Eight others recorded points during the scrimmage, including freshman guard Sam Merrill (nine), senior wing Connor Garner (nine), freshman guard Abel Porter (seven), freshman forward Klay Stall (six), junior forward Ngor Barnaba (six), and sophomore forward Quinn Taylor, sophomore forward Norbert Janicek and freshman guard Diogo Brito, all with five points apiece.
Pearre and Henson were the top long-range threats during the scrimmage as both hit four from behind the 3-point line, with Pearre shooting 4-of-6 and Henson shooting 4-of-8.
Overall, Utah State shot 46.4 percent (45-of-97) from the floor, 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from behind the 3-point line and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free throw line.
Janicek was just behind Rector on the boards, logging seven, including a scrimmage-best four on the offensive end. Taylor followed with six rebounds and McEwen and Barnaba each pulled down five.
Brito finished second on the team in assists, recording five and he was followed by McEwen with three. McEwen led the team in steals, logging three, and was followed by Moore and Brito with two. Moore, Porter and freshman forward Trevin Dorius all tied for the team lead in blocks as each recorded one.
Utah State will host a lone exhibition game against Southern Virginia on Friday, Nov. 4, before opening the 2016-17 season at UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 11. The Aggies will host their home opener against NJIT on Monday, Nov. 14, as part of 16 regular season home games for Utah State during the 2016-17 season.
