Basketball Holds First Scrimmage Of The Season.
Oct. 21, 2000
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's basketball team conducted its first scrimmage of the season this morning at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum utilizing four different 10-minute workouts. Fourteen Aggies participated in the morning practice with several players playing on both squads.
"It's real obvisous that our veterans are ahead of our newcomers, and that is to be expected," commented USU head coach Stew Morrill. "I'm encouraged by some things, but we have a long ways to go and I hope our guys don't think that we are automatically a good basketball team, because if they do they are going to get a rude awakening and learn lessons the hard way. We had good effort today, but we didn't execute real well. We turned the ball over way to much and our offensive execution was poor."
Utah State had five players score in double-figures during the four scrimmages, highlighted by senior center Dimitri Jorssen (Theux, Belgium) who had 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Senior point guard Bernard Rock (New York, New York) had 15 points and four assists, while junior guard Tony Brown (Hyrum, Utah) also had 15 points and four assists. Two other seniors for USU also had good days, as forward Curtis Bobb (Aurora, Colo. ) and guard Dion Bailey (West Covina, Calif.) added 14 and 10 points each. Senior forward Shawn Daniels (Bakersfield, Calif.) scored only eight points, but did add eight rebounds, six assists, and five blocks.
Among the newcomers for Utah State, freshman point guard Thomas Vincent (Overland Park, Kan.) had seven points and three assists, while sophomore transfer Toraino Johnson (El Paso, Texas) added six points and three rebounds. Redshirt freshman Chad Evans (Ogden, Utah) looked impressive as he scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
Utah State will conduct another scrimmage on Friday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum that will be open to the public. USU's first game of the season will be on Saturday, Nov. 4 versus Global Sports at 3:05 p.m.
