Looking at Utah State
Utah State men’s basketball has started the 2016-17 season 2-0 after posting victories over UC Irvine and NJIT. The flawless beginning is the second consecutive 2-0 start under head coach Tim Duryea and the fourth straight year that the Aggies have started undefeated over the first two games.
Senior wing Jalen Moore is leading the Aggies with 20.5 points per game and is tied for first with 5.0 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Koby McEwen and sophomore forward Norbert Janicek have matched Moore’s efforts on the glass, also averaging 5.0 per game, and rank second and third in scoring with 14.5 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.
Overall, Utah State is shooting 52.4 percent (55-of-105) from the floor, 40.5 percent (17-of-42) from behind the 3-point line, 73.1 percent (38-of-52) from the free throw line and averaging 82.5 points per game. Senior guard Shane Rector leads the team with 12 assists, averaging 6.0 per game, with the Aggies totaling 36 assists on 55 baskets.
Defensively, USU is holding opponents to 37.1 percent (46-of-124) shooting from the floor and 30.6 percent (19-of-62) from behind the 3-point line. Teams are shooting 69.0 percent (29-of-42) from the free throw line and averaging 70.0 points per game.
Last Time Out
Utah State had five players score in double figures as the Aggies posted a 93-84 victory over NJIT on Monday night. The win moved USU to 2-0 for the second straight year under head coach Tim Duryea and for the fourth year overall.
Senior wing Jalen Moore led the Aggies with 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and added five assists and one steal. Freshman guard Koby McEwen was just behind with 18 points, followed by freshman guard Sam Merrill with 15, junior forward Ngor Barnaba with 12 and sophomore forward Norbert Janicek with 11.
Senior guard Shane Rector led Utah State with seven assists and McEwen led the Aggies with two steals.
Bristol, a member of the United Stats Collegiate Athletic Association, is located in Anaheim, Calif. The University is no longer accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and therefore is not recognized as a countable opponent by the NCAA. Bristol appealed the ruling and the University’s accreditation remains subject to review and evaluation by ACICS, and as part of that review, it is possible that Bristol’s accreditation may in the future be suspended or otherwise conditioned in a way that affects Bristol’s ability to continue providing academic programs.
Bristol has played a handful of games, with all of the contests counted as exhibitions because of the NCAA’s ruling. The Bears lost each game, 106-64 to Point Loma, 106-39 to Pacific, 97-62 to Humboldt State and 81-45 to UC Riverside. Bristol is averaging 52.5 points per game and shooting 31.5 percent from the floor, 23.7 percent from behind the 3-point line and 67.6 percent from the free throw line over the four-game stretch. Sophomore forward Michael Crosby leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game.
Opponents have averaged 97.5 points per game against the Bears, shooting 53.7 percent from the floor, 39.4 percent from behind the 3-point line and 62.1 percent from the free throw line.
Last Time in An Exhibition
Utah State posted an 83-55 victory over Southern Virginia in an exhibition game on Nov. 4. Freshman guard Koby McEwen led a trio of players in double digits, scoring 19 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor. He was followed by junior guard Julion Pearre with 12 and senior guard Shane Rector with 10. McEwen also finished second on the team with five rebounds, trailing sophomore forward Norbert Janicek with a team-high seven.
Utah State led by as much as 36 in the second half, en route to the 83-55 win.
