Utah State Begins 13-Day Road Trip at Gonzaga on Saturday Night

• Utah State will play the fourth of six games in a nine-day period when the Aggies travel to Gonzaga to face the Bulldogs on Saturday at 8 p.m. (MT).

• The game marks the beginning of a 13-day road trip for the Aggies that also includes stops at Portland State (11/20) and Valparaiso (11/28), and neutral site games in Nashville, Tenn., against Northeastern (11/24) and New Hampshire (11/25).

• Utah State leads the all-time series against Gonzaga, 4-1, but has not faced the Bulldogs since the 1970-71 season. The Aggies lost the first game of the series, 83-72, during the 1952-53 season, but have since won four straight.

• The game on Saturday will mark the third time that Utah State has faced the national runner-up from the previous season. All-time, USU is 1-1 in those games with a 62-54 victory over Utah (11/28/98) and a 62-50 loss against Ohio State during the 1962-63 season.

Scouting Gonzaga
Gonzaga has opened the year 2-0 with victories over Texas Southern, 97-69, and Howard, 106-69. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Championships a season ago and return two starters and six letterwinners from that squad.

Offensively, Gonzaga is averaging 101.5 points per game and shooting 52.8 percent (75-of-142) from the floor, 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from behind the 3-point line and 65.1 percent (28-of-43) at the free throw line. Six players are averaging double figures for the Bulldogs in redshirt junior guard Josh Perkins with 14.5 points per game, followed by redshirt senior forward Johnathan Williams (14.0), freshman forward Corey Kispert (11.5), senior guard Silas Melson (11.5), sophomore forward Rui Hachimura (11.5) and redshirt freshman forward Zach Norvell Jr. (11.5). Williams and sophomore forward Killian Tillie lead Gonzaga on the glass, each averaging 8.5 rebounds per game.


 

 

Defensively, Bulldog opponents have averaged 69.0 points per game and shot 33.6 percent (47-of-140) from the floor, 26.1 percent (12-of-46) from behind the 3-point line and 69.6 percent (32-of-46) at the free throw line. Tillie leads the team with two blocks and Norvell Jr., leads the team with five steals.

Head coach Mark Few is in his 19th season at Gonzaga, leading the team to an overall mark of 505-13 and 18 consecutive berths in the NCAA Tournament.

New Rules, No Problems
Despite the tighter officiating this season, Utah State has committed fewer fouls than each of its opponents this season. Overall, USU opponents have committed 67 fouls to just 46 whistled against the Aggies.

Rain Men
Utah State attempted a school-record 35 3-point shots against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 15, converting 15, third-best in school history.

The Aggies have been committed to the 3-point shot this season, taking 42.5 percent of their overall field goal attempts from behind the arc.

An Aggie Legend’s Alma Mater
Utah State Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Stew Morrill led the Aggies to a school-record 402 games at the helm in Logan from 1999-2015. Morrill graduated from Gonzaga in 1974 and was a two-time all-Big Sky selection for the Bulldogs. Morrill also began his coaching career in Spokane, serving as an assistant coach from 1975-78.
