LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball player Gary Wilkinson has been named the Western Athletic Conference and America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Nov. 16, it was announced on Monday. The USU award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

Wilkinson, a 6-9 senior forward from South Jordan, Utah scored a career-high 24 points and added 12 rebounds in Utah State's 71-50 season opening win against Montana State-Northern Nov. 14. Wilkinson, who played just 27 minutes, was 10-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Overall, it was his eighth career double-double and fifth career 20-point game. This is his first career WAC Player of the Week honor.

Last year in Wilkinson's first season as an Aggie, he averaged 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds and started in all 35 games.

Utah State who is 1-0 thus far this year continues action Monday night at UC Santa Barbara, Calif. with tip off at 8:05 p.m. MT.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - In her first game as an Aggie, Lydia Whitehead (Nibley, Utah) was the second-leading scorer with 12 points. She also added a team-leading 15 rebounds. Whitehead is the first Aggie this season to earn a double-double. Whitehead currently leads the WAC in rebounding. The junior was 6-for-9 from the field with six offensive and nine defensive rebounds. She played 32 minutes in her first game for Utah State after transferring from Utah.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Junior Jason Holt (Fort Collins, Colo.) was the Aggies' top finisher at the NCAA Mountain Regionals Saturday. Holt ran the 10K course in 30:12.9 and finished 19th overall leading the Aggies for the second race in a row. The 10K race was hosted by Colorado State and Holt ran in his home town of Fort Collins, Colo. Holt was named WAC Cross Country Athlete of the Year two weeks ago after finishing first-place overall at the WAC Championships.

 

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Senior Ashley Johnson (Paradise, Utah) was the Aggies' top runner at the NCAA Mountain Regionals Saturday, running the 6K course in 21:03.5 as the 16th overall finisher. Johnson has been the Aggies top finisher in the past two races including a third-place overall finish at the WAC Championships. The WAC Championships and NCAA Regionals were Johnson's first two races of the season.

FOOTBALL - Redshirt freshman running back Robert Turbin (Fremont, Calif.) had 99 yards on 17 carries with three TD's in USU's 45-38 loss at Louisiana Tech. Turbin was the first Aggie running back since Emmett White in 2001 to have three rushing TD's. Turbin scored on a one-yard TD, a 47-yard scamper for a score and a two-yard run.

VOLLEYBALL - Senior outside hitter Kris Hymas (South Jordan, Utah) helped Utah State notch a 1-1 road record last weekend with a four-set win at Louisiana Tech and a three-set loss at New Mexico State. Against the Lady Techsters, Hymas recorded a career-high 16 kills to go along with five digs. She also hit a career-high .316 (16-4-38) in the match. For the week, Hymas hit .227 and averaged 2.67 kills and 0.83 digs per set.
