LOGAN, Utah - Utah State men's basketball player Jarred Shaw has been tabbed by collegehoopsdaily.com as one of its five Western Athletic Conference Players of the Month for his performance in the first month of the season.
The publication announced a five-team awards list for each conference in Division I. Shaw was joined by San Jose State guard James Kinney, who was the overall WAC Player of the Month, along with Louisiana Tech guard Raheem Appleby, Texas State forward Matt Staff and Idaho center Kyle Barone.
Shaw, a junior center from Dallas, Texas (Carter HS/Oklahoma State) averaged a double-double with 14.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game in leading USU to a 4-1 record so far this season. He has two double-doubles on the season, posting his first career double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds in the Aggies' lone loss of the season, 67-58, to Saint Mary's on Nov. 15, which were both career highs for both his USU career and his Oklahoma State career. Shaw's 15 rebounds in that game were the most by an Aggie player since Nate Bendall had 16 rebounds against Fresno State on Jan. 11, 2011.
Shaw also matched his career-high of 17 points in USU's 77-68 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi two days later on Nov. 17. Shaw then posted his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the Aggies' 65-55 win over Weber State on Nov. 24. Shaw has led USU in rebounding in all five games. He also set a career-high with three blocked shots against Weber State and has at least one rejection in each of USU's five games.
In the WAC statistics, Shaw ranks tied for the league lead in field goal percentage (.583), tying teammate Kyisean Reed. Shaw also ranks second in the WAC in rebounding (10.2 rpg) and 10th in scoring (14.6 ppg), as well as tied for fourth in free throw percentage (.850) and seventh in blocked shots (1.4). In the NCAA statistics, Shaw is 22nd in rebounds per game (10.2), 39th in field goal percentage (.583) and 60th in double-doubles (2.0).
Utah State plays at in-state foe Brigham Young on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. The Aggies then return home to host Western Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.
