Al Lewis “The Voice of the Aggies” to Call 1,000th Game

LOGAN, Utah - Al Lewis, the Voice of the Aggies, will call his 1,000th combined football and men’s basketball game on Wednesday night when Utah State hosts Weber State in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum at 7 o’clock.

Lewis’ career has spanned 24 years, beginning in 1977 for two seasons and then again from 1995 to the present. Lewis has seen the Aggies compete in 271 football games, including six bowl games and the first-even Mountain West Championship Game. The bowl games included the 1997 Humanitarian Bowl, the 2011, 2012 and 2015 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the 2013 San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and the 2014 Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

On the hardwood, Lewis has called 729 basketball games, including 21 postseason games from the NCAA Tournament, NIT and CIT. Lewis was behind the microphone in Utah State’s 77-68 overtime victory against Ohio State in the first round of the 2000-01 NCAA Tournament and was also calling the action when Utah State advanced to the finals of the 2011-12 CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

In addition to serving as the play-by-play voice for the Aggies, Lewis was also the analyst during a pair of football seasons and four basketball seasons. Lewis appeared on local cable television for Aggie Replay TV, served as the public address announcer inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and Maverik Stadium and hosted various coaches show for Phil Krueger, Dutch Belnap and Chuck Shelton prior to becoming the Voice of the Aggies.

In all, Lewis has worked in the radio business for 45 years, covering all of Utah State athletics and interviewing athletes, coaches and administrators from across the country.

“My dream job was to announce the Utah State Aggies, so I have lived my dream,” Lewis said in an email. “Thanks to all who have helped and enjoyed it with me.”

USU will host New Orleans on Monday, Dec. 19, before hosting Weber State on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Both games are set to tip at 7 p.m.
