Western Illinois Rallies For 61-58 Win Against Troy In Third Game of Utah State Hosted Basketball Travelers Classic

Adam Link led a trio of double-figure scores for Western Illinois (5-6) with a game-high 24 points to help the Fighting Leathernecks to a 61-58 come-from-behind win against Troy (4-6) here Friday night in the third game of the Utah State hosted Basketball Travelers Classic.
Western Illinois trailed 35-28 at intermission and was behind by as many as 10 points in the second-half before closing the game on a 20-10 run over the final 9:52 to post the three-point victory. During the final 2:04, Troy was 0-of-4 from the free throw line, while WIU was 3-of-4 as Jabari Sandifer hit a pair of free tosses with 0:06 to give the Fighting Leathernecks a two-point advantage, and then went 1-of-2 at the line with 0:01 remaining to make the final score 61-58.
Garret Covington scored 14 points and Tate Stensgard added 13 points for Western Illinois, who finished the game shooting 38.8 percent (19-49), including 25.0 percent from three-point range (3-12) and 74.1 percent at the free throw line (20-27).
Tevin Calhoun had 14 points to lead Troy, while Kevin Thomas scored 13 points and Hunter Williams added 12 points. Troy shot 47.6 percent from the field for the game (20-42), including 43.8 percent from behind the arc (7-16), but were just 11-of-25 (.440) at the charity stripe.
Troy used a 9-1 run in the first-half to open an 18-10 advantage and its lead later swelled to 13 at 35-22 late in the first-half, before Western Illinois scored the final four points to cut the deficit to nine at 35-26 at intermission.
Western Illinois will play its third and final game in the Basketball Travelers Classic against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m., while Troy while play host Utah State at 8 p.m.
