UTAH STATE: A mentally tough player that can play both guard and center on the offensive line.
2013 (RS): Redshirted during his first season at Utah State.
HIGH SCHOOL: Earned first-team all-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) honors as an offensive lineman during his senior year at Chaminade (Calif.) College Prep... Was also named a first-team all-star by the L.A. Daily Times, and earned first-team all-Mission League honors as well... Helped Chaminade to an 8-2 record during his senior year as the Eagles advanced to the CIF semifinals... Earned Chaminade HS Lineman of the Week honors a total of 16 times in career, including nine times in senior season and seven times as a junior... Played in the L.A. Daily News All-Star game... Earned first-team all-Mission League honors as a junior as Chaminade College Prep went 9-1 and advanced to the CIF semifinals... Also a two-year letterwinner in track & field in the shot put.
PERSONAL: Son of Elise Backus and Chase Chen... Majoring in journalism... Originally signed with Utah State in 2012, but did not enroll until the spring semester of 2013... Last name is pronounced Chen (rhymes with ten).
