Football Game Notes - 09/09/13
In all, approximately 51 percent of USU's student-athletes earned a 3.2 GPA to qualify for the awards.
Along with handing out individual awards, a highlight video recapping the year was shown, as was a video honoring USU's senior class, which tied the 1962 senior class for the most wins in school history with 26.
Of its 52 academic all-WAC selections, Utah State had 18 student-athletes from football honored, along with 11 student-athletes from soccer, eight from both women's cross country and volleyball, and seven from men's cross country.

HONORS: Academic All-WAC/Mountain West (2012, 2013); College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mention National Punter of the Week (11/23/13; 11/30/13).
2014 PRESEASON HONORS: Phil Steele Third-Team All-Mountain West.
UTAH STATE: A consistent punter who excels at downing his punts inside the 20-yard line... Is a hard worker and has a very good leg... Will serve as the team's holder for the third-straight season and punter for the second-straight season.
2013 (JR): Played in all 14 games... Finished the season ranking ninth in the Mountain West and 80th in the nation with an average of 39.8 yards per punt as he punted 73 times for 2,903 yards... Had 31 punts downed inside the 20-yard line to rank 11th in the nation, while his 11 punts downed inside the 10-yard line ranked 16th nationally... Finished the year with six punts of 50-plus yards, including a career-long 64-yard punt against BYU (10/4)... Had just six touchbacks on the season, while 39 of his punts were fair caught... Had one of his best games, statistically, against 24th-ranked Northern Illinois in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl as he punted three times for a career-best average of 45.0 yards, including a long of 59 yards... Earned honorable mention National Punter Performer of the Week honors from College Football Performance Awards following USU's 13-0 win against Colorado State (11/23) as he had a career-high eight punts downed inside the 20, with three of them downed inside the 10... Those eight punts downed inside the 20 resulted in CSU having an average starting field position on its own 16-yard line... Overall, he punted nine times in the game for an average of 37.9 yards per kick with a long of 53 yards... Also earned honorable mention National Punter Performer of the Week honors from College Football Performance Awards following USU's 35-7 home win against Wyoming (11/30) as he punted six times for an average of 43.3 yards with a long of 50 yards and had five of his punts downed inside the 20, including one inside the five... Scored his first career touchdown against New Mexico (10/19) as he ran 72 yards for a score on a called punt play on fourth down... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.
2012 (SO): Played in all 13 games... Kicked off 71 times, averaging 63.1 yards, including 26 touchbacks... Also punted twice for an average of 29.0 yards with a long of 39 yards with one touchback... Punted one time for 39 yards against Southern Utah (8/30), and one time for 19 yards at Wisconsin (9/15)... Earned academic all-WAC honors.
2011 (RS-FR): Played in four games as Utah State's number two kicker... Kicked off nine times, averaging 64.2 yards, including two touchbacks... Booted all six kickoffs for USU against San José State (11/12/11) for 388 yards, averaging 64.7 yards per kick and one touchback.
2010 (RS): Redshirted during his first season at Utah State.
HIGH SCHOOL: Earned Utah Class 3A all-state honors by both the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune at Juan Diego (Utah) High School, helping the Soaring Eagle to a 13-1 record and the Utah 3A title for the second-straight season... Booted nine field goals and was 57-of-59 on extra points... Longest field goal was 52 yards... Added 11 catches for 236 yards with one touchdown as a wide receiver... Hit game-winning 28-yard field goal with four seconds left to win the 2008 state championship, and made fields goals from 28 and 46 yards to help win 2009 state championship... Also a two-year starter and letterwinner on the Juan Diego soccer team and a two-year letterwinner and one-year starter on the Soaring Eagle's basketball team.
PERSONAL: Son of Brian and Monica Bentrude... Has one brother and one sister... Brother, Jacob, played football at Utah... Graduated from USU in the spring of 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering and is pursuing his master's in business administration.
