Utah State Football Starts Fall Camp Friday, Aug. 5

Fourth-year head coach Matt Wells welcomes back 12 starters (O-9, D-3) and 38 letterwinners (O-20, D-15, S-3) from last year's team that finished tied for second in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West with a 5-3 record, and played in its school-record fifth-straight bowl game.

His two interceptions against Idaho State (9/6/14) are the most by a true freshman in a single game in school history.

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS:  Had 120 interception return yards as a senior in 2017, which ranks as the sixth-most in school history.

SINGLE-GAME RECORDS: Set the school record by returning two interceptions for touchdowns against BYU (9/29/17), a mark that is also tied for the most in Mountain West history… Intercepted three passes against BYU (9/29/17), which is tied for the most in Mountain West history and ranks as the second-most in a game in school history.

2017 (SR): Earned first-team All-American honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and second-team All-American honors from The Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America and Phil Steele… Also garnered first-team all-Mountain West honors and was a Jim Thorpe semifinalist as the top defensive back in the nation as he started all 13 games at cornerback… Finished the season with 33 tackles (23-solo, 10-assist), including 4.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss, which ranked first and second on the team, respectively… Also had five interceptions and 15 pass breakups, to rank first on the team in both categories, to go along with one forced fumble… Returned those five interceptions for 120 yards, which ranks as the sixth-most in a single-season in school history… Was named the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week, the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after intercepting a career-high three passes and returning two of them for touchdowns, from 30 and 50 yards, against BYU (9/29)… Those three interceptions are the second-most in a single-game in school history and tied for the most in MW history, while his two interception returns for touchdowns are a school record and tied for the MW record… Also had five tackles and one pass breakup against the Cougars… Intercepted two passes, returning one of them 25 yards for a touchdown, against Idaho State (9/7)… Had a career-high four pass breakups against Hawai’i (11/18), three pass breakups at Wake Forest (9/16) and two pass breakups against New Mexico State (12/29) in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl… Had a season-high six tackles against Colorado State (10/7) and added five stops against Boise State (10/28), while tallying one pass breakup in each game… Had a sack and forced a fumble on the same play against San José State (9/23) that led to a 38-yard fumble return for a touchdown… Also had sacks at No. 9 Wisconsin (9/1), versus Wyoming (10/14) and Hawai’i, and a tackle for loss at New Mexico (11/4).

2016 (JR): Started all 10 games that he played in… Missed the Wyoming (11/5) and New Mexico (11/12) games due to injury… Finished the season with 37 tackles (24-solo, 13-assist)… Ranked tied for third on the team with 2.0 sacks and was fifth on the team with 5.0 tackles for loss… Led the team with seven pass breakups and tied for the team lead with one forced fumble, to go along with one interception… Recorded a career-high eight tackles against Air Force (9/24), which included a career-high-tying 2.0 tackles for loss… Also had a forced fumble and pass breakup against the Falcons… Registered six tackles, including 1.0 sacks, at USC (9/10), and had five tackles, including 1.0 sacks, at Nevada (11/19)… Also had five tackles, to go along with two pass breakups, at Colorado State (10/8)… Intercepted his only pass of the year in the season-finale at BYU (11/26) and returned it 37 yards… Finished the season by recording at least one tackle in nine of the 10 games he played in.

2015 (SO): Started all 13 games at cornerback and earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors, along with third-team all-MW accolades from Phil Steele... Led the team with eight pass breakups (0.85 pg) to rank ninth in the conference, including a career-high three against Southern Utah (9/3)... Tied for first on the team with three interceptions, which was tied for 10th in the MW... Interceptions were against Colorado State (10/3), No. 21 Boise State (10/16) and Akron in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (12/22)... Also tied for third on the team with two quarterback hurries and sixth in tackles with 51 (32-solo, 19-assist), to go along with 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks and a forced fumble... Recorded a season-high seven tackles against Boise State and at New Mexico (11/7), and had at least four tackles in nine games during the season... Also returned six punts for 57 yards (9.5 ypr), including a season long of 35 yards against Southern Utah, and six kickoffs for 106 yards (17.7 ypr), including a season long of 20 yards at Washington (9/19).

2014 (FR): Started all 13 games he played in at cornerback and was named a 247Sports True Freshman All-American as he finished the season tied for sixth on the team with 61 tackles (44-solo, 17-assist)... Was also tied for second on the team in interceptions with two, and fourth on the team with seven pass breakups, while adding 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry... Started his first career game at Tennessee (8/31), posting four tackles... Became the first true freshman to start his first career game since Chuckie Keeton started his collegiate opener at Auburn in 2011, and is the first true freshman in school history to start the season opener at cornerback... Was named an honorable mention national Defensive Back of the Week by College Football Performance Awards as he recorded his first two career interceptions, in just his second-ever collegiate game, against Idaho State (9/6) as he returned one 44 yards for his first career touchdown... Overall, he had 65 return yards on his two interceptions, to go along with one tackle and one pass breakup for three passes defended against the Bengals... His two picks against ISU are the most by a true freshman in a single game in school history... Recorded a season-high seven tackles in four different games against Colorado State (10/18) and UNLV (10/25) in back-to-back games, and again against Wyoming (11/7) and New Mexico (11/15) in back-to-back games... Had six stops against both BYU (10/3) and Hawai’i (11/1)... Added a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss, including 1.0 sacks, against CSU... Also had tackles for loss against BYU and UNLV... Added five kickoff returns during the season for 113 yards (22.6 ypr) as he returned two kickoffs for 66 yards against San José State (11/21), including a career-long return of 44 yards... Also had two returns for 27 yards against Boise State (11/29) and one return for 20 yards against UNM.  

HIGH SCHOOL: Named the Grossmont-Hills League Defensive Player of the Year and an all-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) first-team selection at cornerback as a prep senior at Helix High School in La Mesa, Calif., as he recorded 45 tackles... Earned first-team all-Grossmont-Hills honors at wide receiver as a senior as he caught 48 passes for 649 yards (13.5 ypr) with four touchdowns, and returned 17 punts for 348 yards (20.5 ypr) with four touchdowns... Returned 10 kickoffs for 379 yards (37.9 ypr) with two touchdowns... Had a punt return, a fumble return and an interception return all for touchdowns against Granite Hills HS as a senior... Helped the Highlanders to three-straight Grossmont-Hills League Championships during sophomore, junior and senior seasons, and a CIF Division II state championship as a sophomore... Had seven interceptions and five touchdowns as a junior, and 35 total tackles and four interceptions as a sophomore... Also competed on the track & field team.

PERSONAL: One of two children of Verdis and Dana Davis… Graduated from USU in the spring of 2018 with a sociology degree.
