Football Game Notes - 09/09/13
Former Aggie has spent the past five seasons on the Utah State coaching staff, including the past two years as the defensive line coach after being promoted from a defensive graduate assistant in 2011.
Senior DL has played in every Aggie game duirng his two years since transferring from Foothill JC.
Senior defensive lineman Al Lapuaho has started 15 games for head coach Gary Andersen during his two seasons at USU.

Frank Maile (my-leh) is entering his sixth season on Utah State's football staff, including his third year in charge of the defensive line after being promoted from a defensive graduate assistant in 2011.
Prior to being a graduate assistant, Maile spent two years as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach at Utah State.
During the 2012 season, Maile helped Utah State's defense rank first in the Western Athletic Conference and seventh in the nation in scoring defense (15.38 ppg), second in the WAC and tied for sixth nationally in sacks (3.23 pg), first in the WAC and 10th in the nation in pass efficiency defense (104.43), second in the WAC and 13th in the country in rushing defense (113.77 ypg), first in the WAC and 15th in the nation in total defense (322.08 ypg), and first in the WAC and 32nd in the nation in passing defense (208.31 ypg).
Utah State's defense also led the WAC and ranked second in the nation in red zone efficiency at 63.6 percent allowing just 13 touchdowns and 15 field goals on 44 trips inside the 20. USU's defense also ranked eighth in the nation forcing 5.08 three-and-outs per game in 2012, while ranking 21st in third down efficiency at 32.88 percent (73-222).
In 2012, Maile coached three defensive linemen who earned all-WAC honors in senior Al Lapuaho, redshirt freshman Jordan Nielsen and junior Connor Williams. Lapuaho became the first Aggie defensive lineman to earn first-team all-conference honors since John Chick in 2005, while Nielsen was named to the second-team and Williams earned honorable mention honors.
As a senior, Lapuaho tied for the team lead among all USU defensive linemen and finished the year ranking 10th on the team with 35 tackles, to along with 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, four quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.
As a redshirt freshman, Nielsen finished the year ranking third on the team with 5.0 sacks and fifth overall with 6.5 tackles for loss, while finishing tied for 10th on the team in tackles at 35 along with Lapuaho. Nielsen, who also ranked ninth in the WAC in sacks (0.38 pg), also ranked first on the team with two blocked kicks during the year as he blocked an extra point at Wisconsin and a 43-yard field goal at Louisiana Tech.
Williams finished the 2012 season leading the team and ranking tied for eighth in the WAC with six sacks (0.46 spg). Williams also ranked fourth on the team with 7.0 tackles for loss and was 12th in overall tackles with 32, in addition to recording two quarterback hurries and forcing one fumble on the season.
During the 2011 season, Maile helped Utah State's defense end the year ranking first in the WAC and 50th in the nation in total defense (366.23 ypg), second in the WAC and 31st in the nation in rushing defense (127.70 ypg), second in the WAC and 53rd nationally in tackles for loss (5.92 pg), third in the WAC and 48th in the nation in pass efficiency defense (125.58) and third in the WAC and 59th in the nation in sacks (1.92 pg).
In 2011, Maile coached senior defensive end Levi Koskan who earned second-team all-WAC honors after finishing the year with 27 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss and a team-best 5.5 sacks, as well as six quarterback hurries. Overall, Koskan ranked eighth in the WAC in sacks and 12th in tackles for loss.
Maile also coached Quinn Garner and Lapuaho in 2011, and both tied for team highs amongst defensive linemen with 31 stops. Garner added 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks during the year, while Lapuaho had 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks.
In 2010, Maile worked with the Aggies' defensive line, including Garner (43 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, two sacks) and Koskan (41 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks). Koskan led the team in both tackles for loss and sacks, ranking 11th in the WAC in sacks and 17th in tackles for loss.
Maile was a standout defensive lineman for the Aggies from 2004-07, making 21 starts in playing 42 career games. He posted 71 total tackles (45 solo, 26 assists) with 19 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. In his senior season of 2007 as team captain, Maile accounted for eight tackles for loss, tying for second on the team.
A native of West Valley City, Utah, Maile was a first-team all-state defensive lineman at Alta (Utah) High School. He went on an LDS Church Mission to the Dominican Republic from 2001-03.
Maile earned his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Utah State in 2007 and earned his master's in education in 2010.
Maile, and his wife, Heather, have three sons, Maximus (9), Samson (5) and Titan (2), and one daughter, Cecilia (7).
