Described by Aggie head coach Brent Guy as "Mr. Utah State", Tom McMahon enters his eighth year as a full time assistant coach as well as his 11th year as part of the USU football program. McMahon will coach the defensive line for the fifth consecutive year as well as continue his role as recruiting coordinator. McMahon joined the USU program in 1995 and spent one season as a video coordinator before working with the defensive ends as a graduate assistant in 1996 and 1997. One of his players, Ben Crosland, earned Big West defensive player of the year honors in 1997. He was named a fulltime assistant coach in 1998 and spent the next three seasons working with the Aggie linebackers. During that time he coached first-team all-league selections Brent Passey, Blake Eagal, Jesse Busta and Big West defensive player of the year Tony D'Amato. In 2004 and 2005 defensive lineman Ronald Tupea was named second-team all-Sun Belt Conference while being coached by McMahon. "Tom has been through three coaching staffs here and knows Utah State inside and out," Guy said. "He is a great coach and a solid recruiter." McMahon began his coaching career at his alma mater of Carroll College. After concluding his four-year playing career, he coached the school's secondary in 1992 and 1994. In between he spent one season at Bozeman (Mont.) High School. A native of Helena, Mont., McMahon is married to the former Kim Sullivan and they have three children, Dawson, Emmett and Quincy. McMahon earned his bachelor's degree in math and secondary education at Carroll in 1992 and added a master's degree in secondary education from Utah State in 1997. |
