UTAH STATE: A student of the game who has great size and length for his position... Is an aggressive player who runs to the ball well... Has a great motor and attitude.

2014 (JR): Started all 14 games... Earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors and was a Phil Steele third-team all-Mountain West selection as he finished the season with 53 total tackles (18-solo, 35-assist) to go along with 2.5 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss... Added five quarterback hurries, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery... Ranked first on the team among defensive linemen and eighth overall with his 53 tackles, while his 7.0 tackles for loss ranked fifth on the team... Recorded a career-high seven tackles against San José State (11/21) and posted six stops each in back-to-back games against Air Force (10/11) and Colorado State (10/18), and against UTEP (12/20) in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl... Also had a season-high 1.5 tackles for loss against the Miners... Added five tackles against both Arkansas State (9/20) and New Mexico (11/15)... Had sacks against CSU, AFA, UNLV (10/25) and UTEP... Added 1.5 tackles for loss against UNM to go along with one tackle for loss against Idaho State (9/6) and CSU... Finished the season by recording at least one tackle in all 14 games, and had a tackle for loss in eight games... His fumble recovery was against Air Force... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.

2013 (SO): Played in all 14 games with one start... Finished the season with 35 total tackles (9-solo, 26-assist) to go along with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks... Recovered his first career fumble against Weber State (9/14)... Had a season-high five tackles against BYU (10/4) and added four stops each in back-to-back games at home against Colorado State (11/23) and Wyoming (11/30)... His sacks came against Boise State (10/12) and Wyoming, while adding tackles for loss in five games during the season... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.

2012 (RS-FR): Played in all 13 games... Earned second-team all-WAC honors after ranking tied for third on the team and tied for ninth in the conference with 5.0 sacks (0.38 pg)... Also ranked fifth on the team and 20th in the WAC with 6.5 tackles for loss (0.50)... Finished the season tied for first on the team among defensive linemen with 35 tackles... Also led the team with two blocked kicks during the season as he blocked an extra point at Wisconsin (9/15) and a 43-yard field goal attempt at No. 19 Louisiana Tech (11/17)... Also had three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup on the year... Recorded five-plus tackles in three-straight games during the end of the season as he had a career-high six tackles against Texas State (11/3), followed by five-tackle outings in back-to-back games against Louisiana Tech and Idaho (11/24)... Had a career-high 2.0 sacks against Utah (9/7) and San José State (10/13)... Also had four tackles against both the Utes and Spartans... Was one of 32 players, including linebacker teammate Kyler Fackrell, named to the College Football Performance Awards National Freshman Performer of the Year Watch List... Earned academic all-WAC honors.

2011 (RS): Redshirted during his first season at Utah State.

HIGH SCHOOL: Earned second-team 4A all-state honors and named the Region 5 Defensive MVP at Sky View (Utah) High School after racking up 66 tackles and nine sacks during senior season... Played best game of the year in the season finale against Mountain Crest HS, tallying up 10 tackles and a season-high three sacks... Made 85 tackles and 12 sacks during junior season, earning him honorable mention all-state accolades... Finished high school career with 151 tackles and 21 sacks... Also carried the ball two times for 18 yards... Averaged 7.9 points per game during senior season on the basketball court for Sky View, as well as logging one shutout as the keeper for the Sky View soccer team... A member of Sky View's National Honor Society.

PERSONAL: Son of John and Teresa Nielsen... Has four brothers and one sister... Graduated from USU in the spring of 2015 with a degree in human movement science with an emphasis in pre-physical therapy and is currently pursuing his second bachelor’s degree in biology.
