Utah State Football Starts Fall Camp Friday, Aug. 5

Fourth-year head coach Matt Wells welcomes back 12 starters (O-9, D-3) and 38 letterwinners (O-20, D-15, S-3) from last year's team that finished tied for second in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West with a 5-3 record, and played in its school-record fifth-straight bowl game.

HONORS: Honorable Mention All-Mountain West (2016); Phil Steele Third-Team All-Mountain West (2016); Academic All-Mountain West (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016); National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society (2016).

CAREER RECORDS: Ranks second all-time in school history among tight ends in career receptions (86), career receiving yards (933) and career touchdown receptions (9).

2016 (SR): Played in all 12 games, making nine starts and earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors, along with being named to the Phil Steele all-Mountain West third-team… Finished the season leading all Mountain West tight ends with 35 receptions, while ranking second among all tight ends in the conference with 330 receiving yards… Ranked third on the team in both receptions (35) and receiving yards (330), and ranked tied for second with his two receiving touchdowns… Of his 35 receptions, 17 resulted in a first down, with 10 of those happening on third down… Led the Aggies in receptions five times during the year, including against both Fresno State and Wyoming as he caught a career-high five passes… Had five catches for a season-best 43 yards against Fresno State (10/22), including a 5-yard touchdown reception… Also had five receptions for 37 yards at Wyoming (11/5)… Caught four passes for 33 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown, at USC (9/10)… Had three receptions in five other games and caught at least one pass in all 12 games, including multiple receptions in 10 contests... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors and was named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

2015 (JR): Played in all 13 games, making nine starts... Finished the year with 25 receptions for 307 yards (12.3 ypc) with three touchdowns... Ranked fourth on the team in receptions, third in receiving yards and tied for second in touchdown catches... Tied his career high with four receptions for a career-best 66 yards against Wyoming (10/30), while catching a career-best two touchdowns (8, 25) against the Cowboys... Other touchdown reception on the season was against No. 21 Boise State (10/16) on a 2-yard catch... Also had four receptions for 41 yards against Akron in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (12/22)... Had at least two receptions in nine games during the season... Returned his first career kickoff for 28 yards against Nevada (11/21) and recorded his first career tackle against Utah (9/11)... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.

2014 (SO): Played in all 14 games, making eight starts... Finished the year with 19 receptions for 178 yards (9.4 ypc) with two touchdowns... Had a career-high four receptions against both Wake Forest (9/13) and at Boise State (11/29)... Added three receptions for a season-best 54 yards against New Mexico (11/15)... Had a 5-yard touchdown reception against Wake Forest and a 10-yard touchdown reception against New Mexico... Recorded at least one reception in nine games during the season... Finished the year fifth on the team in both receptions (19) and receiving yards (178), and was tied for third with his two receiving touchdowns... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.

2013 (FR): Played the final seven games of the season and made three starts... Finished the year with seven receptions for 118 yards (16.9 ypr) with two touchdowns... Had a 44-yard touchdown reception against Hawai’i (11/2) and a 6-yard touchdown reception against Wyoming (11/30)... Had a season-high two receptions for 26 yards against Colorado State (11/23)... Also had one reception for 23 yards at New Mexico (10/19), one reception for eight yards at UNLV (11/9) and one reception for 11 yards against then-No. 24 Northern Illinois in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl... Earned academic all-Mountain West honors.

HIGH SCHOOL: Earned Oregon Class 3A second-team all-state honors at quarterback as a prep senior at Horizon Christian High School in Tualatin, Ore., as he accounted for 41 touchdowns, passed for nearly 2,500 yards and rushed for 900 yards... Earned first-team all-state honors during his junior season as he was 154-of-265 (.581) passing for 2,054 yards (13. ypc) with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions... Also rushed for 692 yards on 163 carries (4.2 ypc) with five touchdowns as a junior... Was also all-state in basketball during his sophomore and junior seasons... Was a member of the National Honor Society and leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes... Named Horizon Christian HS Spanish Student of the Year as a freshman... Is the first athlete from his high school to sign a Division I scholarship in any sport.

PERSONAL: One of three children of Bill and Susie Houston... Father played tight end at Air Force... Great uncle, David Sawyer, played basketball at Pittsburgh... Grandfather played minor league baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization... Graduated from Utah State in the fall of 2016 with a degree in sociology and a minor in criminal justice.
