LOGAN, Utah -
Quarterback Darell Garretson set a school record for passing yards by a freshman in helping Utah State post a 47-10 win against a travel-weary Hawai'i team on a picturesque autumn afternoon here Saturday at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium.
Hawai'i arrived in Logan at 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning after their plane from Los Angeles was delayed due to an incident at the Los Angeles International airport.
Utah State improved to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in Mountain West Conference action. USU has won 10 of its last 12 home games and six of its last seven home conference games.
Hawai'i dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in MW play with the loss.
Garretson threw for 370 yards on 28-of-41 passing with three touchdowns, setting a school record for most yards by a freshman and is the first Aggie to throw for 300 yards since Brett Stevens in 1985. Those 370 passing yards by Garretson are the most by an Aggie quarterback this year.
Utah State ended the game with 533 yards of total offense, its fourth game this season with 500-plus yards of total offense, getting a season-high 370 yards passing to go with 163 yards rushing. Senior running back Joey DeMartino led the rushing attack with 104 yards on a career-high 20 carries and a touchdown, for his fourth 100-yard rushing outing this season, including in each of his last two games.
Senior wide receiver Travis Reynolds had a career-high 152 receiving yards on a career-high tying eight catches with a third-quarter touchdown as his 152 receving yards are the most by an Aggie wide receiver since 2002. Sophomore wide receiver Bruce Natson notched seven catches for 34 yards with a touchdown, which was USU's first of the game.
Sophomore linebacker Kyler Fackrell led the Utah State defense with nine tackles and snared an interception near the Hawai'i goalline and scampered 99-yards for a touchdown, for the third-longest interception return in school history. The linebacker duo of senior Jake Doughty and junior Zach Vigil had eight stops apiece. Junior safeties Brian Suite and Frankie Sutera also had interceptions, with Suite's coming early in the second quarter and Sutera's coming on the final play of the first half, catching it at the USU 10 and returning it 61-yards before being tackled to end the half.
Utah State also kicked four field goals in the game, getting three from junior placekicker Nick Diaz, while freshman placekicker Jake Thompson boomed a 52-yarder late in the first half which is tied for the 10th-longest field goal in school history.
Hawai'i had 319 yards of total offense with 260 passing on a combined quarterback effort by Sean Sullivan who was 13-of-26 passing for 213 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown, while Taylor Graham was 8-of-16 passing for 45 yards. The Rainbow Warriors were held to 59 yards rushing by the Aggie defense, a season-low for the USU defenders.
Freshman running back Diocemy Saint Juste led UH with 48 yards on seven carries, while Steve Lakalaka had 36 yards on 12 carries, but the Rainbow Warriors had 26 yards lost on two sacks and six tackles for loss by the USU defense.
Scott Harding, who is also UH's punter, led the Rainbow Warriors with eight catches for 68 yards. The UH defense was led by Charles Clay with 14 tackles, while John Hardy-Tuliau and Ne'Quan Phillips had 10 stops each.
The Aggies scored their first touchdown of the afternoon on an 11-yard pass from Garretson to Natson and Diaz split the uprights for a 7-0 lead.
Hawai'i closed to 7-3 on its ensuing possession on a 33-yard field goal by Nick Hadden, but on the Aggies' next possession, Diaz drilled a 40-yard field goal to give USU a 10-3 lead after the first quarter.
DeMartino darted in on a 4-yard scamper for a 17-3 lead just 33 seconds into the second quarter. That would remain the score until 3:28 was left in the half when Diaz kicked a 32-yard field goal, capping USU's third 10-play or more drive play of the half.
With 50 seconds to go in the half, Thompson came on and booted a 52-yard field goal to five the Aggies a 23-3 lead at intermission.
Hawai'i scored its lone touchdown of the day on a 33-yard pas from Schroeder to Keith Kirkwood at the 13:17 mark of the third quarter to make the score 23-10, but the Aggies scored the final 24 points of the game.
Following UH's third quarter touchdown, Diaz split the uprights from 32-yards out with 9:51 to go in the period for a 26-10 lead, and Garretson connected with Reynolds for a 30-yard scoring strike at the 6:20 point of the third quarter to give the home team a 33-10 advantage. Later in the third, Hawai'i was deep into Utah State territory following a Garretson interception before Fackrell stepped in front of a Schroeder pass at the USU 1, and darted behind a convoy of blockers and ran 99-yards for the touchdown.
Garretson hit freshman tight end Wyatt Houston on a pass, catch and run for a 44-yard touchdown to cap the Aggies' scoring with 10:29 left in the game.
Utah State heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for its next game, playing at UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 9. The battle between the Aggies and Rebels will kickoff at 6 p.m. (MT), and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
