USU Football Loses In Final Minute At UL-Monroe

MONROE, La. - Utah State rallied from an 18-7 deficit midway through the third quarter to take a 25-18 lead before falling 32-25 as Louisiana-Monroe scored the game-winning touchdown with :50 left to beat the Aggies in Sun Belt Conference football action here Saturday.

The loss, Utah State's fifth straight, dropped the Aggies to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the Sun Belt, while UL-Monroe improved to 4-5 and 3-2.

Utah State lost a game in the final minute for the first time since 1997, when North Texas scored the game winning touchdown with :02 remaining to beat the Aggies 51-48.

USU trailed 18-7 midway through the third quarter before rallying to take a 25-18 lead with 9:22 left in the game. However, ULM rallied with a touchdown at the 6:31 mark and a Steven Jyles touchdown run with :50 remaining to get the win.

"This was a good football game and I think both teams played very hard," said USU head coach Mick Dennehy. "It had a lot of momentum swings. We played hard from behind and they played hard from behind. This was just a good college football game and a tough one to lose."

Freshman Kevin Robinson returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, for the first kickoff return for a score by an Aggie since Kevin Alexander in 1994. The 94-yarder was the sixth longest in school history. Robinson now has two punt returns and one kickoff return for a score this season.

Quarterback Travis Cox had one of his best days of the season as he threw for 263 yards and one touchdown as the Aggies produced their most total yards of the season with 393. USU's previous best yardage total this year was 369 vs. North Texas.

Other Aggies with season best days included tailback Chris Forbes with 74 rushing yards and wide receiver Raymond Hicks with eight receptions. Wide receiver Tony Pennyman recorded his third 100-yard receiving day with seven catches for 114 yards.

 

 

Utah State will have a short week as the Aggies make their fourth straight road trip, traveling to Arkansas State for a Thursday night game that will be televised on ESP regional, including KJZZ-TV in the state of Utah.

O - USU has now lost four straight road games... The Aggies are 0-6 on the road in their Sun Belt Conference history (two years)... The home team has won each of the three games in this series (ULM leads the series 2-1.

O - The last time USU lost a game in the final minute was a 51-48 loss at North Texas when the Meen Green scored the game-winning touchdown with two seconds left to beat USU in 1997.

O - USU produced a season-high offensive yardage total (previous best was 369 vs. North Texas).

O - Freshman Kevin Robinson recorded his third return of the year for a score as he entered tonight with two punt returns for touchdowns and then added a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. That marked the first kickoff return for a touchdown for USU since 1994 (Kevin Alexander vs. Colorado State) as well as the sixth longest in school history (longest since 1981 - Arvin Ellis, 96 yards vs Idaho State).

O - With his kickoff return for a touchdown, Robinson became the first USU player to have a kickoff return and a punt return for a touchdown in the same season since 1994 (Kevin Alexander).

O - QB Travis Cox has now thrown at least one touchdown pass in 18 of 21 starts.

O - The 35-yard touchdown pass from Travis Cox to Rod McNeal matched the third-longest USU touchdown from scrimmage this year.

O - CB Cornelius Lamb recorded his third interception of the season.

O - USU recorded multiple defensive interceptions for the third time this year.

O - TB Chris Forbes had a career-high rushing yardage total (previous best was 44 yards against Idaho) as well as a career high rushing attempts (previous best was 11 against both Alabama and Clemson).

O - USU had its streak of having at least seven players record a reception stop at 13 consecutive games.

O - USU has started a different offensive line tandem in each of the last four games.

O - WR Raymond Hicks had a season high in receptions (previous best was five on two occasions).

O - LB Matt Wiser made his first career start and responded by recording his first career interception on UL-Monroe's first possession. He started in place of Robert Watts, who had started 25 consecutive games (Watts did not start due to coaches' decision).

O - USU entered tonight 0-5 this season when the opponent scores first.

O - USU's first quarter touchdown was just its second in the last 10 quarters.

O - WR Tony Pennyman has caught at least three passes in every game this season.

O - Pennyman recorded 80 receiving yards in the first half. His best totals this season are 119 vs. UNLV and 117 vs. North Texas.

O - Kevin Robinson, the nation's leading punt returner, had just his third return of less than 10 yards this season (10 of his 13 returns have been at least 10 yards).

O - TB Chris Forbes had eight carries in the first half. The most rushing attempts he has had in a game are 11 (against Alabama and against Clemson).

O - USU's 162 yards at halftime were more than it had in either of the last two games (139 vs. Clemson and 156 vs. Middle Tennessee).
