LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State Head Coach Matt Wells
"What a whirl. That was an interesting ball game, and I'm just so proud of our players. That was a heavyweight fight within our front seven on both sides of the ball against a really great rushing offense. With the conditions and the kicking game, I'm just so proud of our guys and the focus and resiliency that they showed in finding ways to make a play and a touchdown and field goals. There were times that we didn't execute as well as we wanted to, if we had we would have won 43-0. What an outstanding job by our defensive staff and defensive players. This is the first shutout in 10 years. Hats off to our defense for an unbelievable effort. I'm just so proud of our kids. It's hard to win games in Division I football. You learn to win games and that shows the character of a program. It was another total team win and gets us to 6-1 in the Mountain West. We've got a chance to fight and stay alive in the conference championship race."
"Part of our plan for winning is to win the fourth quarter, and we did that. We took care of the football. Sometimes you have to play field position football, you've got to play great defense. The plan to win held true. We stick by it to win ball games. To get to seven wins with all the adversity we've dealt with, I'm so proud of these kids."
Senior Running Back Joey DeMartino:
"I thought the offense played great today. The scoreboard doesn't show it, but we knew this was going to be a grinder game the whole two weeks we've had off. We knew they were going to show up and that the battle would be between the front sevens. I think the offense did great to pull out the win and the defense did really well to pull out the goose egg."
On the team stepping up through all the injuries:
"If I went down, we'd expect another running back to step up. When Chuckie (Keeton) went down we knew someone would have to step up. We have the right guys on our team who can step up. It's unfortunate, but it's football and injuries happen. Our team is just clicking right now. We know guys will step up, and we'll put the pressure on them to do so."
Junior Linebacker Zach Vigil
"Overall, I think we executed pretty well today. This whole week a big point of emphasis was stopping Kapri Bibbs. The past few weeks he's been going off, and I think we did a good job of stopping him today."
On getting the first shutout since 2003:
"That's huge. From a defensive standpoint, there was a lot of heart out there today. We were flying around and running to the football and that's something we tried to talk to the guys about today. We didn't do a good enough job of that against UNLV. In a low-scoring football game, getting the shutout is huge."
Colorado State Head Coach Jim McElwain
"It was an old-fashioned butt-kicking there. We started out, obviously didn't get anything going offensively. That's about as static of a performance as I've ever been associated with. Give their defense credit. Give their special teams credit. I think it seemed like every time we looked out we were down inside our 20, and every possession they had it seemed like they were starting around the 40. It really goes to show you that field position is something we never overcame. A couple penalties I thought there early pushed us back and made it worse, but give them credit. I thought our defense answered the bell as to what we talked about last week. We had some guys really playing with energy, playing sound, disciplined football on defense. It's just too bad to waste that defensive performance in a game you have a chance to win on the road."
On the special teams battle:
"You know, it was windy on both accounts, and they handled it better. It's hard, when you play that bad on offense and not take advantage of a great defensive effort."
On Utah State's defensive play:
"They beat us at the point of attack, number one. They were controlling the line of scrimmage and knocking us back. We weren't getting our second step in the ground. I thought they were doing a good job of slanting a little bit. And the third down pressure, which we knew would be an issue, for the most part in the first half had it under control, then they had a couple where they got two outside on us, and we didn't get the ball off. They're a good defense, we knew that going in it was a challenge and we lost the challenge."
