2005 Utah State Football Signing Day Notes

• Utah State signed 23 players, including 21 high school and two junior college players.

• In the previous six years (1999-2004), USU has averaged signing 16.5 high school, 8.2 junior college and 0.7 major college transfers.

• The 21 high school signees are the most since USU signed 27 in 2001 (also signed five junior college players that year).

• USU signed players from seven different states as well as one signee from Canada. USU signed 11 players from California, four from Utah, three from Texas, and one each from Alabama, Arizona, Florida and Kansas.

• In all, USU signed 13 offensive players (six linemen, two wide receivers, and two quarterbacks as well as one running back, one tight end and one 'athlete.').

• USU also signed nine defensive players (four linemen, four defensive backs and one linebacker). USU also signed one kicker/punter.

• Those with USU ties include Alan Bishop from Daleville, Ala., whose father Kevin was a pole vaulter at Utah State and Daryl Fields from Encino, Calif. whose cousin Dion Bailey played basketball for the Aggies in 2000 and 2001.

• RB Keith Gilliam was the Texas 4A Player of the Year after rushing for 2,775 yards.

• Canadian kicker/punter Darryl Wheeler will be the first foreign player to not have played in the United States before joining USU since Todd Sorme from Red Deer, Canada, who came to USU in 1984 and lettered from 1985-87. Players from outside the United States that have been on a USU roster since then include Malik Cin (Weisbaden, Germany/Richfield (Idaho) HS, current player), Lance Sopoaga (American Samoa/Snow JC, 1999), Walter Zdravkovic (Nuernberg, Germany/Ricks JC, 1999), Mauricio Jourdan (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Chaffey JC, 1997), Darcy Heggie, Raymond, Alberta, Canada/Utah Valley State, 1995), Kel Waltrin (Okotoks, Canda/Redmond (Wash.) HS, 1992), and Wylie Wayne (Okotoks, Canada/Foothills JC).

• USU signed four returned LDS Church Missionaries in Ryan Bohm, Derek Hoke, Mike Martini and Jase McCormick. All four players are from the state of Utah a Bohm is from Logan, Hoke from Pleasant Grove, Martini from Fremont High School in Plain City and McCormick from Northridge High School in Layton.

• USU signed a pair of twins brothers in Caleb and Josh Taylor, a pair of defensive backs from Santiago High School in Corona, Calif.

• USU signed two pair of teammates in Caleb and Josh Taylor from Santiago High School in Corona, Calif. and Daryl Fields and Taylor Wallace from Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif.
