LOGAN, Utah - Utah State had 11 former football players work out in front of National Football League (NFL) scouts Thursday in USU's annual Pro Day. In all, scouts from the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, along with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League where in attendance Thursday.
Participating in this year's Pro Day event included defensive back Terrence Alston, wide receiver Matt Austin, tight end Kellen Bartlett, defensive back Will Davis, wide receiver Chuck Jacobs, defensive tackle Al Lapuaho, offensive tackle Oscar Molina-Sanchez, defensive back Jumanne Robertson and running back Kerwynn Williams.
Pro Day began in the USU weight room where players had their height, weight and wing span measured, followed by performance tests in the broad jump, vertical jump and bench press.
The remaining drills were performed in Utah State's Stan Laub Indoor Practice Facility, where players were timed in the 40-yard dash, shuttle run and three-cone pro agility run, along with other on-field tests.
Highlighting Thursday's action was Austin who ran a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash, while Jacobs posted a time of 4.56. Jacobs also performed well in the broad jump with a distance of 10'4", while McClenton's jump measured 10'3". Davis and Jacobs had the best vertical jumps of the day at 36.0", while Robertson jumped 35.0". Lapuaho posted 33 reps in the 225-pound bench press.
Davis and Williams, who both excelled in last week's NFL Scouting Combine, sat out all the measured tests except Davis' vertical jump. However, both players did participate in on-field drills and felt good about their performances.
"I think the workout went well," said Williams. "There were some drills I hadn't seen before, so I'm just trying to take what I can from these drills and keep on pushing. The punts were high and the one I missed was a short one and I should have got that one. You shouldn't leave any balls on the ground, but I think it was a good day catching the ball."
"I probably wasn't as smooth as I wanted to be on some of those drills, but the ball is still going to be there," said Davis. "As a defensive back, you aren't going to get a good ball, no one is going to throw it to you right on target. It's going to be like that in games and you've got to sell out. The main thing I wanted to do today was show my ball skills and show I could catch the ball. I dropped one and that was frustrating because it was probably the easiest one of all. Otherwise I was happy."
Players will now wait for the NFL Draft, which will take place Thursday through Saturday, April 25-27 from Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Round one is on Thursday, April 25. Rounds two and three will be on Friday, April 26, and rounds four through seven will be on Saturday, April 26.
