LOGAN, Utah - Utah State had 18 former football players work out in front of 20 National Football League (NFL) Scouts and one Canadian Football League (CFL) representative Tuesday morning in its annual Pro Day.
In all, scouts from the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins and Edmonton Eskimos were in attendance.
Participating in this year's Pro Day event included safety Maurice Alexander, cornerback Quinton Byrd, running back Joey DeMartino, linebacker Jake Doughty, cornerback Tay Glover-Wright, center Tyler Larsen, cornerback Nevin Lawson, offensive guard Jamie Markosian, running back Robert Marshall, nose guard AJ Pataiali'i, defensive end Paul Piukala, offensive tackle Eric Schultz, offensive guard Sini Tauauve'a, tight end D.J. Tialavea, wide receiver Travis Van Leeuwen and defensive end Connor Williams.
Pro Day began in the USU Strength & Conditioning Center, where players had their height, weight and wing span measured, followed by performance tests in the broad jump, vertical jump and bench press.
The remaining drills were performed in Utah State's San Laub Indoor Practice Facility, where players were timed in the 40-yard dash, shuttle run and three-cone pro agility run, along with other on-field tests.
Highlighting Tuesday's action was Lawson and Glover-Wright, who both ran 4.30 in the 40-yard dash, while Byrd clocked in with a time of 4.34, DeMartino had a time of 4.38, Doughty ran a 4.53 and Pataiali'i ran a 4.94. DeMartino and Glover-Wright both had vertical jumps of 36.0", while Lawson had a jump of 34.5" and Pataiali'i had a jump of 31.5". In the broad jump, Glover-Wright finished with a leap of 9'11" and Pataiali'i had a jump of 9'0". Filimoeatu posted 33 reps in the 225-pound bench press, while Pataiali'i finished with 29 reps, Markosian and Schultz each had 27 reps, Williams had 26 reps, Doughty had 24 reps and Tialavea had 22 reps.
"I definitely feel like I've improved since the Combine," said Lawson. "My goal was to come out here and improve my numbers and performance in every aspect and I know I did that."
"Today went well, I'm excited," said Pataiali'i. "I talked to my agent and he said my numbers are some of the top numbers from the Combine this year, so hard work pays off. I've put in a lot of hard work over the last few months so this was the time to show it off and show the scouts that I can be a top-caliber player for their organization."
Utah State's four players who participated in the NFL Scouting Combine - Alexander, Larsen, Lawson, Tialavea - sat out most tests Tuesday, but did participate in position drills.
Players will now wait for the NFL Draft, which will take place Thursday through Saturday, May 8-10 from Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Round one is on Thursday, May 8. Rounds two and three will be on Friday, May 9 and round four through seven will be on Saturday, May 10.
