LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State football held its 14th spring practice Thursday afternoon on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium and the quarterbacks are using this spring to learn the offense and improve their footwork.
"Through the first month, what we have been trying to improve on with the quarterbacks and get better at is improving our footwork and using our feet to put our ourselves in positions to be successful with our throws," said offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach David Yost. "The more you use your feet, the better your feet are and the more accurate you are, so everything starts at the base.
"We are also constantly reemphasizing and learning the offense inside and out so we know every aspect of it, so when we call a play it sticks in their head and they can attack the defense."
Myers has played in 28 games during his Utah State career, with 25 starts, and ranks fourth all-time in school history in completion percentage (.605), sixth all-time in school history in total offense (5,963 yards), tied for eighth all-time in school history with 31 career touchdown passes, and ninth all-time in school history in career passing yards (4,848), career completions (411) and career pass attempts (679). He has also rushed for 1,115 yards on 257 carries (4.4 ypc) during his career and ranks 25th all-time in school history in career rushing yards, including third all-time among quarterbacks.
"The quarterbacks have adjusted well this spring," said Myers. "I kind of had this offense in high school so I have probably adjusted to it the fastest."
During the 2016 season, Myers completed 211-of-361 (.584) passes for 2,389 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He finished the season ranking first in the Mountain West in completions per game (17.7), third in the MW in total offense (236.9 ypg), fifth in the conference in passing (199.5 ypg), sixth in the MW in completion percentage (.586), eighth in the conference with 10 touchdown passes, and eighth in the MW in passing efficiency (118.8).
His 211 completions as a junior rank ninth all-time in school history for a single season and he finished the 2016 season with 2,838 yards of total offense (2,389 passing yards, 449 rushing yards) to rank 10th all-time in school history for a single season.
As a junior, Myers completed a career-high 29 passes in back-to-back games against Air Force (9/24) and Boise State (10/1) as he was 29-of-47 passing for a season-high 360 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Falcons, and 29-of-50 passing for 287 yards with one touchdown against the Broncos, as those 50 attempts are also a career high.
Nelson has been Utah State's holder on special teams in all 25 games over the past two seasons, but has not seen any time at quarterback. As a specialist, he has carried the ball twice for six yards and has one completion for 12 yards.
"The expectations for the offense should be that we are a high-tempo and highly-efficient offense that puts our guys in positions to be successful and try to get our playmakers the ball in space as much as we can," added Yost.
Utah State will conclude spring practice this weekend by hosting its annual Blue vs. White Spring Game on Saturday, April 8, on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium at 2 p.m.
