LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's football team wrapped up its third of four weeks of spring practice with a short 26-play scrimmage in front of a crowd, which included a number of former Aggies who have returned for Alumni weekend.
The 26-play scrimmage was capped by the only scoring play of the afternoon as tight end Rob Myers pulled in an 11-yard pass from Bryan Black to cap a 65-yard drive on the final play of the day. Myers, a 6-4, 230-pound redshirt freshman from Houston, Texas, caught one of the five completions the Aggies recorded.
"Myers, a year ago was a redshirt," said USU head coach Brent Guy. "He has really come on. He has had a great off-season. He did drop one, but he did catch the one in the endzone. We are excited about him because we think he is a tight end, who can stretch defenses vertically, especially when matched up with a linebacker. He is going to be real hard to cover."
Jerrod Walker was the next quarterback to run the offense and he attempted just one pass, which fell incomplete. Black, a junior, who did not see action last year after playing in a limited role in 2004, was four of six for 26 yards and the score.
Junior college transfer Marcus Cross was a bright spot for the Aggie offense as he rushed nine times for 59 yards behind a patch work offensive line, which includes just seven healthy linemen.
Cross, who signed with the Aggies out of Garden City (Kan.) Junior College this past December, gained at least seven yards on four of his first five carries with an 11-yard burst on his second attempt.
"I thought it was pretty obvious that Marcus Cross can help us in our offense," Guy said. "He has the ability to get out into space and make plays, get to the edge. He jumped out."
Utah State will practice four times next week to wrap up spring drills. USU will hold another open short scrimmage on Friday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in its final workout.
