LOGAN, Utah - Former Utah State football player James Brindley signed a free agent deal with the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday evening at the completion of the NFL Draft.
"It's very exciting. It's one step closer to a dream come true," Brindley said. "I've been talking to a few teams all week, but the Seahawks' coaches have been calling and texting me a lot and showed the most interest. Before the draft was over, my agent called and said it was a done deal that I was going to Seattle."
Brindley, a native of Grass Valley, Calif. (Nevada Union HS), was ninth in the Western Athletic Conference and 91st in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in tackles with 7.8 per game in 2009, despite missing two complete games and halves of two others with a leg injury. Brindley also ranked third among the league's defensive backs in tackles. Additionally, Brindley ranked third overall in passes defended with nine on six pass break-ups and three interceptions.
He earned first-team all-WAC honors from Phil Steele's College Football Preview in 2009. Before the 2008 season, he collected second-team preseason all-WAC Phil Steele's College Football Preview honors. Brindley was also a two-time academic all-WAC honoree.
Brindley finished his Aggie career with 259 tackles (153 solo, 106 assists), including eight tackles for loss, as well as nine career INT's, 12 pass break-ups, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He played in 46 career games and made 31 career starts.
The safety ranks 12th on USU's career interceptions list with nine, but is second on the Aggie career list for interception return yardage with 210 yards.
Brindley, who was one of 15 undrafted players to ink a free agent deal with Seattle on Saturday, reports to the Seahawks' rookie camp next Friday-Sunday, April 30-May 2.
