LOGAN, Utah - In its first practice of fall camp with full pads, Utah State's defense garnered high praise from fourth-year head coach Gary Andersen as the team worked out for two hours Wednesday morning on newly resurfaced Merlin Olsen Field inside Romney Stadium.
"When we got to the scrimmage and went live, it went back and forth. I thought the first offense controlled the second and third down scenarios very well early. When the second offense and second defense played, I thought the defense controlled that drill. When we went live, I thought the first defense dominated the first offense, and the second offense had a nice drive going until they through a pick," said Andersen.
"At the end of the day, a lot of guys didn't play and that's how it's going to be all the way through camp. That's good though, that's gives us a chance to look at the young kids. We'll look at the young running backs, look at the young receivers and young offensive linemen," Andersen added.
Highlights from Utah State's fifth practice of the fall camp include an interception by sophomore safety Frankie Sutera and a fumble recovery by junior linebacker Cade Cowdin. Sophomore safety Brian Suite, junior linebacker Jake Doughty and redshirt freshman linebacker Kyler Fackrell also performed well Thursday for USU's defense.
"I thought it was a great practice, especially with the defensive line," said senior defensive lineman Al Lapuaho. "We'll see when we watch film, but from what I saw the defensive line was playing physical and playing hard. We still have some things to work on, but as a team I think we did great today being the first day of full pads. I'm pretty excited."
Utah State's first two-a-day is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 9 as the team will practice in the morning from 9:15 to 11:15 and again in the afternoon from 2:15 to 4:15, both on the USU practice fields. All practices during fall camp, which concludes on Saturday, Aug. 25, are open to the public.
Utah State will conclude its first full week of camp with its initial scrimmage of the fall on Saturday, Aug. 11 on Merlin Olsen Field inside Romney Stadium at 10 a.m. The scrimmage will contain at least 100 snaps.
For the first time since 1996, the Aggies will open a season with back-to-back home games, hosting a pair of in-state foes in Southern Utah on Thursday, Aug. 30 and Utah on Friday, Sept. 7. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. (MT) starts from Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. The Aggies' game against Utah will be on ESPN2.
