Utah State Football Goes Through First Two-A-Day Saturday
Aug. 14, 2010
LOGAN, Utah -
Aggie Fact of the Day:
Aggie Tidbit of the Day:
Utah State football had not one, but two practices on Saturday, the Aggies' first two-a-day practice of preseason camp. USU was in action on the practice field for both practices, taking to the grass in the morning and returning in the late afternoon.
"We capped a solid first week of practice and had some really good energy and excitement," USU head coach Gary Andersen said. "We had a very physical practice this morning where we really emphasized the run game. We came back this afternoon and worked a lot on special teams and the passing game. I was very pleased with the all-around defensive effort today."
The Aggies were in full pads in their morning practice before donning helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for the afternoon practice.
"Cameron Sanders had another good day and he's had a terrific week. Jake Doughty has really continued to improve and also had a solid week," Andersen said of a pair of redshirt-freshmen in Sanders, a cornerback from Oklahoma City, Okla. (Millwood HS), and Doughty, a linebacker from Sandy, Utah (Juan Diego HS).
Andersen also pointed out that there is no clear-cut placekicker yet.
"The kicking competition for field goal and extra point duties is still up in the air and its a three-man race between freshmen Braeden Loveless and Nick Diaz, and senior Peter Caldwell," Andersen said. "We'll have to see how that battle progresses through the next couple weeks of camp."
Loveless (South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS) and Diaz (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) are both freshmen who are battling senior Caldwell (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS).
Utah State will have Sunday off before starting its second week of preseason camp another two-a-day on Monday, at 9 a.m. and 4:55 p.m. The Aggies will have their first scrimmage of preseason camp on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 a.m. at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium.
Saturday was Utah State's sixth of its 29 preseason practices before the season opener against No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. (MT).
All practices through Aug. 21 are tentatively open to the public, but fans must remain off the field. When USU is on the practice field, all fans must stay outside of the fence and when the Aggies are on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium, fans must remain in the stands at all times. All practices from Aug. 23 through Sept. 3 are closed to the public. All open practices are subject to change.
USU's final scrimmage of the fall will be in association with Utah State Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey's Foods, and will be held on Saturday, August 21 at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. The event provides fans a chance to meet USU football players and coaches, participate in games and activities as well as purchase season tickets.
