LOGAN, Utah -
Aggie Fact of the Day:
Aggie Tidbit of the Day:
Utah State football scrimmaged for the final time of preseason camp Wednesday evening, conducting a controlled scrimmage that lasted roughly 100 plays at Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium.
The first-string ran plays in "thud" mode, while the second and third-string were live, with full contact. The USU coaching staff was fine-tuning plays and schemes in their last scrimmage of the preseason camp.
"It was a tough scrimmage for the ones when it is not live, there is always `was he or wasn't he' down, but we got the reps that we needed I believe with the ones and we will evaluate the film and see where we are sitting," USU head coach Gary Andersen said. "It was a good rep day, and also lots of special teams were out there, those are live out there, so it is good to get those on film."
Offensive highlights included sophomore running back Kerwynn Williams posted 29 yards on four carries, including a an 11-yard TD run. Senior running back Derrvin Speight added 27 yards on seven carries while sophomore running back Joey DeMartino tallied 23 yards on seven rushes.
"I think the scrimmage went real well today. The offense executed real well, we reduced our MA's (missed assignments), which was what Coach Baldwin was shooting for," Williams said.
Williams also had an 81-yard punt return for a TD, getting a wide open alley created by his blockers on the way to the end zone.
"It was very good blocking. Everyone was pouring out on the punt return team, flying around knocking people into the dirt," Williams said. "I feel like I owe it all to the scheme. Coach Woods and Coach Tuiaki put together a good scheme all week. We practiced all week until we got everyone in the right spot so I just followed the blocks and everyone made good blocks."
Other offensive highlights included a 70-yard pass play from Austin to Austin, as junior wide receiver Austin Alder had a wideout pass to fellow junior wide receiver Matt Austin, who snared the pass and dashed to the endzone. Matt Austin ended with 81 yards on two catches while sophomore wide receiver Mikhail Morgan had two receptions for 27 yards, 20 coming on a TD pass from senior quarterback Diondre Borel during the redzone portion of the scrimmage.
Defensive highlights featured senior Jerome Barbour's scrimmage-best eight tackles, including three sacks. Barbour was switched from part-time linebacker, part-time defensive end to full-time defensive end this week and the move paid off as Barbour also shared top honors with junior linebacker Kyle Gallagher with three tackles for loss. Sophomore cornerback McKade Brady added seven stops to go with three pass break-ups, one of which was a TD-saving hit, dislodging the ball from sophomore wide receiver Emmanual Ojeriakhi at the goal line.
Junior safety Walter McClenton, senior defensive end Maxim Dinka-Mba and Gallagher all added six tackles apiece, while four other defenders had four stops each. The USU defense logged seven sacks in the scrimmage, one by junior defensive end Levi Koskan.
"Overall, it was a pretty fun scrimmage and a pretty fun camp. We took care of business and we are moving forward," Koskan said.
Utah State will have its final two of day of camp on Thursday, wrapping up with single practices on Friday and Saturday to work on preparations or the 2010 season-opener at No. 7/8 Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. (MT).
