LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football quarterback Chuckie Keeton has been named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week as well as being named one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week and earning honorable mention for the weekly Davey O'Brien Quarterback award.
The Manning Award is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and names eight players as Stars of the Week each week. Fans can go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for the best performance of the weekend. Voting will close Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. (MT) and the player with the most votes will be named the Manning Award Player of the Week.
In the Manning Award vote, Keeton is up against Devin Gardner (Michigan), Matt Johnson (Bowling Green), Sean Mannion (Oregon State), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Zach Mettenberger (LSU), Aaron Murray (Georgia) and JT Walsh (Oklahoma State).
Fans also have a continued vote for the Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award. Michigan's Gardner was named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week. Fans can vote online at www.VoteOBrien.org, with votes counting for 5 percent of the overall voting process. Semifinalists will be announced Nov. 4.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits characteristics such as integrity, teamwork, sportsmanship and determination. The recipient must have ties to the state of Texas, from being born there to playing football at any level.
Keeton, a 6-2, 200-pound junior from Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek HS) tied his own school record with five touchdown passes (30, 23, 20, 36, 1) in handing Air Force its worst home loss since 2005. Against the Falcons, he completed a career-high 32 passes and tied his career-high with 40 pass attempts, while throwing for 360 yards, which is the second-most in his career. Keeton also rushed for a game-high 77 yards on just eight carries, including a 30-yard run, to become the 25th player in school history and just second quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a career.
On the season, Keeton ranks first in the Mountain West (MW) and third in the nation in total offense (418.0 ypg), second in the MW and tied for sixth in the nation in completions (31.5), first in the MW and 20th in the nation in passing efficiency (175.9), second in the MW and 10th in the nation in passing (337.0 ypg), and sixth in the MW and 60th in the nation in rushing (81.0 ypg).
Utah State is 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play after posting a 52-20 win at Air Force last weekend in its first-ever Mountain West game. This week, USU begins its home season by hosting Weber State (1-1) in its annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. Overall, USU has won eight straight home games and 17 of its last 21 games overall.
