USU was 1-2 in September last season after dropping all four of its September games in 2007 and all five games in September in 2006... -- Senior LB Paul Igboeli shares the conference lead for sacks with one, ranking tied for 18th in the country.
-- Junior P Peter Caldwell is second in the WAC and tied for 11th in the NCAA in punting with a 45.0 ypp average.
LAST GAME NOTES -- USU at #19 Utah - Sept. 3, 2009 - Salt Lake City, Utah post-game notes:
-- Senior LB Paul Igboeli made his 33rd consecutive start as well as his 33rd career start, both of which lead the team... Second for total starts is senior S James Brindley, who made his 22nd career start, while junior OL Spencer Johnson is third, making his 20th career start in the game.
-- Five Aggies made their first career starts: junior RB Michael Smith, junior DT's Sean Enesi and Daniel Gurrola, junior DE Devin Johnson and sophomore LB Quinn Garner... All are junior transfers except Garner, who played in all 12 games last season.
-- The 48-yard pass play from Diondre Borel to Stanley Morrison on USU's opening drive is a new career-long reception for Morrison, topping his previous long of 46 last season against Idaho (Sept. 20).
-- USU scored on its opening scoring drive for the second game in a row, dating back to last year's final game.
-- Utah State scored first vs. UU for third year in a row... USU is 5-5 when scoring first over the last three seasons.
-- Sophomore RB Robert Turbin's 96-yard TD rush in the first quarter is a USU school-record for longest rushing play, topping the 95-yard rush by Percy Hanson in 1920 vs. Colorado Mines... It ties the longest offensive play in school history, matching a Craig Bradshaw to Fred Fernandes 96-yard pass play vs. Arizona State in 1979.
-- Turbin broke the longest individual school record and Hanson held the second-oldest school record... The oldest school record is the team winning margin (136-0 over Idaho State in 1919).
-- Senior S James Brindley snagged his seventh career interception, returning it to the same corner of the field as his 64-yard INT return in 2007, which ended at the UU 1... Brindley needs three more oskies to crack into USU's career INT list... Brindley's 20-yard return gives him 206 for his career, expanding on his hold of the No. 2 spot on USU's career INT return list and leaving him 167 yards from No. 1 Henry King's 373 yards (1965-66).
-- Borel scored his sixth career rushing TD with the 1-yard scamper in the second quarter.
-- USU had two one-play scoring drives in the game (Turbin's 96-yard rush and Borel's 1-yard rush)... The Aggies had three one-play scoring drives all of last season.
-- Turbin's 148 rushing yards is a new career-high, topping his 123 yards vs. Idaho last year (Sept. 20), and is his second career 100-yard rushing outing.
-- Turbin's 148 rushing yards are the most for a USU individual since James Samuals' 159 yards rushing vs. Troy State in 2002.
-- Brindley's 14 tackles are his second-most ever in game (15 vs. Idaho - 11/24/07).
-- Sophomore DE Bobby Wagner recorded a career-high 12 tackles. His previous career-high was 10 vs. Louisiana Tech in 2008.
-- USU now trails the overall series vs. Utah, 77-28-4, having suffered its 12th-straight loss in the series... The nation's 12th-longest series takes a two-year hiatus, resuming in 2012.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN -- Utah State football head coach Gary Andersen announced the Aggies' 2009 captains, after a vote by the team... All three of the defensive captains are seniors, while the offensive captains consist of a senior, a junior and a sophomore... Representing the defense will be the senior trio of safety James Brindley, linebacker Paul Igboeli and cornerback Kejon Murphy... The offensive captains are senior center Brennan McFadden, junior quarterback Diondre Borel and sophomore running back Robert Turbin.
SEVEN OF UTAH STATE'S 2009 OPPONENTS WENT TO BOWL GAME -- A total of seven of Utah State's 2009 opponents went to a bowl game... The list includes five Western Athletic Conference teams in addition to two non-conference foes, including Utah who was selected to a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game and won the Sugar Bowl... The WAC tied a conference record by having five teams selected to a bowl game, last happening in 1992... There were six bowl eligible teams and only San Jose State did not get selected, while Boise State, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Louisiana Tech and Nevada were all selected for postseason play.

Sophomore RB Robert Turbin had three rushing TD's vs. Louisiana Tech last season, becoming the first USU RB to have three rushing TD's in one game since Emmett White had three on Nov. 17, 2001 against Weber State... The last three-rushing TD outing against a Division I team was also by White, against Arkansas State on Oct. 28, 2000.
Turbin's eight rushing TD's last season put him five shy of USU's career top 10 list, trailing three players with 13 each in Jerry Cox (1973-74), Jerry Hughes (1971-72) and Altie Taylor (1966-68).
Sophomore QB Diondre Borel smashed USU's single-season rushing yards by a QB record with 632 yards... The previous record was 338 by Leon Jackson III in 2007... His 632 yards rushing puts him over two-thirds of the way to Jackson's career record of 814 yards from 2004-07.
Borel's 1,705 passing yards is the most by a USU QB since Travis Cox's 1,908 yards in 2004... Borel's total offense sum of 2,337 yards is No. 13 on USU's single season total offense list, becoming the 17th Aggie overall in school history to reach the 2,000-yard plateau and the first since Cox with 2,844 in 2003.
Borel's single-game rushing high was 93 yards, 28 yards shy of the USU single-game record for a QB of 121 yards, held by Tony Adams from 1972.
Borel was one of seven quarterbacks in the country to lead their respective teams in both rushing and passing, and Borel was the only sophomore on the list:

He needs 79 tackles to tie Al Smith (1984-86) for No. 10 on the Aggies' career list, as well as needing 57 stops to tie Bryce McGill (1999-2003) from Fresno State on the WAC list.
Senior S James Brindley is currently No. 2 on USU's career interception return yards with 206 yards on seven career INT's, needing three to crack the top-10 list.
