Diondre Borel Tabbed America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week
Sept. 22, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football player Diondre Borel has been tabbed the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Sept. 21. The honor was announced Monday and is voted on by a state-wide media panel. This is Borel's first USU Athlete of the Week honor and the first honor for a football player this season. Borel, a sophomore quarterback from Oakley, Calif. (Freedom HS), made his first career start Saturday in USU's 42-17 win over Idaho in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams, vaulting the Aggies to the top of the league standings. He was 12-of-21 passing for 191 yards and a season-best two TD's, as well 93 rushing yards and another score, which was his first career rushing TD. He scored on a career-long 33-yard run for USU's first TD of the day to tie the score at 7-7. Borel then had a 46-yard pass to Stanley Morrison to tie the score at 14-all and then tossed a 15-yard TD pass to Jeremy Mitchell in the third quarter that put USU ahead for good at 21-17. That was the first seven of USU's 28 straight points to pull away for the Aggies' first victory of the season and extend their WAC game win streak to three in a row, the second-longest in the conference. On the season, Borel leads USU with 217 yards rushing (4.4 ypc) with one TD and is 41-of-75 passing for 490 yards with five TD's. Borel is one of two players in the WAC to lead his team in both rushing and passing, joining fellow sophomore QB Colin Kaepernick of Nevada. Borel ranks fifth in the WAC and 63rd in the NCAA in passing efficiency (126.2), as well as sixth in the conference and 83rd in the country in total offense (176.8 ypg). He also is seventh in the WAC in rushing (54.2 ypg) and eighth in the league in passing average per game (122.5 ypg).
Borel and the Aggies are off this week before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 3, hosting in-state rival and 11th-ranked BYU. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Romney Stadium, wrapping up USU's three-game homestand. Aggie football tickets are available in person through the USU Ticket Office at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum through Friday at 5 p.m., online 24 hours a day at www.UtahStateAggies.com and clicking on "tickets" in left column, or by phone by calling 1-888-USTATE-1 or (435) 797-0305.
