Walter McClenton Collects America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete Of The Week Accolades
Oct. 26, 2009
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football player Walter McClenton has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 19-25, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel. This is McClenton's first career Utah State Athlete of the Week accolade. McClenton, a sophomore safety from Arlington, Texas (Bowie HS), had just one career tackle to his name coming into Saturday, but came off bench and logged a career-high 14 tackles, to lead USU to its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season with a thrilling 23-21 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday. McClenton, who posted one sack, one forced fumble and one pass break-up, was called into action after staring safety James Brindley went out with an injury in the second series. His sack and forced fumble came on the same play, sacking LTU QB Ross Jenkins on a third-down play, forcing LTU to punt, and setting up USU's winning points. That play was his third tackle in a span of four plays. The 14 stops ties Brindley for the most for USU this season and is tied for the second-most in the WAC this year. Utah State takes a 2-5 overall and 1-2 WAC mark into Saturday's game at Fresno State (4-3, 3-1 WAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (MT). from Fresno State's Bulldog Stadium. The Aggies continue their two-game road swing by heading to Honolulu to take on Hawai'i on Saturday, Nov. 7 in a 9 p.m. (MT) battle. USU then returns to the friendly confines of Romney Stadium for its final two home games, opening with San Jose State on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. (MT) and closing with a nationally-televised game against nationally-ranked Boise State on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. For season and single-game ticket information, contact the USU Ticket Office at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, by phone by calling 1-888-USTATE-1 or (435) 797-0305, or online 24 hours a day at www.UtahStateAggies.com and clicking on the "buy/renew tickets" under the "tickets" drop down menu.
Nominees from other sports included: SOCCER - Sophomore forward Shantel Flanary (Highland, Utah) scored the only goal for Utah State in its 3-1 loss at Hawai`i on Sunday. Flanary played all 90 minutes in the match and had four shots including one on goal. MEN'S TENNIS - Junior Bryan Marchant (Salt Lake City, Utah) led Utah State at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., advancing the farthest for USU in both the singles and doubles consolation draws. Marchant fell to Denver's Fabio Biassion, 6-4, 7-5, in the singles draw of 32. He also teamed up with junior Jakob Asplund in doubles competition, falling in the doubles draw of 64, 8-6, to Montana State's Alberto Fuentes and Fletcher Keyes. VOLLEYBALL - Junior libero Christine Morrill (Neola, Utah) recorded double-digit digs in each of Utah State's matches last week as the Aggies lost to Idaho twice and Boise State once. Against the Vandals, Morrill had 25 and 17 digs, and posted 12 digs against the Broncos. For the week, Morrill averaged 4.91 digs per set. 2009-10 Utah State Athlete of the Week Winners
