LOGAN, Utah - For the third time this season, Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton has been named the Western Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in leading Utah State to a 48-17 WAC road win at UTSA Saturday afternoon.
Keeton was also named College Sports Madness' WAC Offensive Player of the Week this past weekend for the second time this year.
Overall, Keeton is the fifth Aggie this year to earn WAC Player of the Week honors for the eighth time joining senior punter Tyler Bennett (9/10), senior running back Kerwynn Williams (9/24), redshirt freshman linebacker Kyler Fackrell (10/8, 10/15), and redshirt sophomore placekicker Nick Diaz (10/22).
Keeton, who was also named the WAC's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10 and Oct. 1 following wins against Utah and UNLV, becomes the first Aggie to earn conference player of the week honors three times in one season since Aaron Jones was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week three times in 2000. As for the WAC, Keeton is the league's first three-time winner since Hawaii's Bryant Moniz and Boise State's Kellen Moore won Offensive Player of the Week honors, four and three times apiece, respectively, during the 2010 season.
Keeton, a 6-1, 200-pound sophomore from Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek HS) completed 27-of-36 passes for 340 yards this past weekend against the Roadrunners, as those 27 completions are a career-high. Keeton also had three touchdowns in the game to go along with one rushing yard on six carries. Overall, it was Keeton's third career 300-yard passing game as his 340 yards Saturday rank as the second-most in his career.
Against UTSA, Keeton helped Utah State score 40-plus points in its third-straight game for the first time since 1990 as the Aggies had 522 yards of total offense (394-passing, 128-rushing).
On the season, Keeton ranks second in the WAC and 17th in the nation in total offense (301.4 ypg), third in the WAC and 20th in the nation in passing efficiency (154.3), third in the WAC and 29th in the nation in passing (261.7 ypg), and 10th in the WAC in rushing (39.8 ypg).
Overall, Keeton is 197-of-290 passing this year for 2,355 yards with 19 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Those 19 passing touchdowns currently rank tied for sixth all-time at USU for a single-season. Keeton also has 86 carries for 358 yards on the year to go along with three rushing touchdowns.
Utah State (7-2, 3-0 WAC) is off to its best start to a season since the 1978 team won seven of its first nine games, while its 3-0 league record is its best since the 2000 team won its first four Big West Conference games. In all, Utah State has won a school-record eight-straight WAC games dating back to last season and is 12-3 in its last 15 games, which is its best stretch since the 1972-73 seasons.
Utah State continues WAC play at home this weekend against Texas State (3-4, 1-1 WAC) on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised regionally by KMYU (Comcast Ch. 22, Dish Network Ch. 12, DirecTV Ch. 12, Over-the-Air 2.2). Overall, USU has won each of its last six home games to rank as its best home winning streak since the 1966-68 teams combined for eight-straight home wins.
