LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football player Kerwynn Williams has been tabbed as the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 1-7, it was announced Monday. The Utah State accolade is chosen by a statewide media panel.
Williams, a sophomore kick returner/running back from Las Vegas, Nev. (Valley HS), totalled a career-best 230 all-purpose yards in USU's 27-22 win over NMSU Saturday, as Utah State rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit and a 17-7 halftime hole, USU's largest rally since 2001 and largest halftime rally since 2007.
His 230 all-purpose yards topped his career-best for the second-straight week, bettering his 228 yards last week at Nevada. While he didn't have a kick return for a TD like he did at Nevada, Williams did have returns of 84 and 68 yards, both of which set of USU TD's, the later of which put the home Aggies ahead for the first time and gave them the lead for good at 24-20 midway through the third quarter.
So far this season, Williams has two of the top four longest kick returns in the Western Athletic Conference, as his 84-yarder Saturday is No. 4 while his 92-yarder for TD last week is No. 2.
Williams leads the WAC and is 11th in FBS in all-purpose yards (160.9 ypg) along with leading the conference and ranking ninth in the country in kick return average (28.6 ypr), and is the only player in not only the conference but also the country with over 1,000 kick return yards on the season (1,085).
This is Williams' first career USU weekly honor and the second USU accolade for a member of the Aggie football team, joining senior running back Derrvin Speight, who earned the accolade on Oct. 4.
Williams and the Aggies head to California for the second time this season, taking on San Jose State on Saturday, Nov. 13. The match-up between the Aggies and the Spartans is slated for a 6 p.m. (MT) kickoff and will not be televised.
USU returns home to host Idaho in the Aggies' home finale on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. (MT). Utah State closes out the regular-season at Boise State on Saturday, Dec. 4.
