Nov. 19, 2008
LOGAN, Utah - Former Utah State quarterback legend Anthony Calvillo and former Aggie cornerback Mark Estelle have led the Montreal Alouettes to Sunday's Canadian Football League 96th Grey Cup championship. Montreal faces the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday, Nov. 23 with kickoff slated for 4 p.m. (MT) from Olympic Stadium at Montreal, Canada. The game will be broadcast on Versus (Comcast Ch. 34 in Cache Valley). Calvillo, a Los Angeles, Calif., native who played at Utah State from 1992 to 1993, is ranked No. 31 in the NCAA record book for career total offense per game with 265.4 yards. He also holds the USU single-season total offense school record of 3,260 yards, set in 1993, as well as the school record of five touchdown passes in a game, which he accomplished twice. Estelle, a native of Compton, Calif., played for the Aggies from 2001-2004. He was USU's defensive MVP in 2003 after recording 45 tackles, five pass break-ups and two interceptions. For his Aggie career, Estelle had 99 tackles, four interceptions and 19 pass break-ups. Calvillo is pursuing his second Grey Cup title during his storied CFL career, leading the Alouettes to the title in 2002, while Estelle is after his first CLF championship. This season Calvillo completed a league-high 472 passes for 5,633 yards and a league-best 43 touchdowns as Montreal scored a team-record 610 points in 18 games. Those stats have put him in contention for a second Outstanding Player award, which will be announced Thursday. Calvillo also set a single-game record with 44 completions against Hamilton on Oct. 4. For his career, Calvillo has 58,674 passing yards on 4,264 completions for 328 TD's. He is now second only to Damon Allen, who played 23 seasons before retiring after last season, in completions and passing yards and is only six short of Ron Lancaster for second place in TD passes. Estelle, who is in his third season with Montreal, has posted 54 tackles this season and snared one interception. For his Alloutte career, he has 101 tackles and four interceptions, one returned for a TD, as well as one fumble recovery.
