Utah State's Nick Vigil Named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State linebacker Nick Vigil has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, for his career performance in the Aggies' win against Wyoming Saturday, it was announced by the league office Monday.

In addition to the conference award, Vigil was named the College Sports Madness Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week as well an honorable mention national linebacker of the week by College Football Performance Awards.

Vigil, a redshirt freshman from Plain City, Utah (Fremont HS), is receiving each of these awards for the first time in his career.

Overall, Vigil is the fourth Utah State defender and fifth Aggie to earn MW Player of the Week accolades.

Against Wyoming, Vigil recorded a career-high 3.5 sacks and a career-best 4.0 tackles for loss as part of his seven total tackles in Utah State's 35-7 home win against Wyoming. Vigil, who also had one quarterback hurry in the game, accounted for minus 39 yards with his 4.0 tackles for loss. In all, he helped the USU defense limit Wyoming to a season-low seven points and a season-low 190 yards of total offense as UW entered the game ranked No. 13 in the nation in total offense.

On the season, Vigil ranks seventh on the team with his 45 total tackles. He is also tied for first on the team with his 4.0 sacks, and is fifth on the team with his 7.0 tackles for loss, while his three quarterback hurries rank second overall.

Up next, Utah State will play No. 24 Fresno State in the inaugural Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. (MT). The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
