LOGAN, Utah - Utah State football fans are encouraged to vote for Utah State sophomore running back Josh Flores for the Rudy Award.
Fans can vote for Flores at http://www.collegerudyawards.com/nominees/48/nominee.aspx?pid=48&mid=133
Voting is open until Dec. 15. Fans can vote more than once per day, they just have to enter the security code shown after clicking on "Vote" on Flores' nomination page.
Flores is one of 49 candidates for the Award, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary character, courage, contribution and commitment as members of their collegiate football teams. These same traits were immortalized in the blockbuster film "Rudy" in 27 seconds and against all odds on the Notre Dame gridiron in South Bend, Ind., enabling Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger to carve his name into college football lore.
Three Rudy AwardsTM finalists will be chosen by the Selection Committee, as well as through fan voting online at http://www.collegerudyawards.com/NomineeSearch.aspx, and honored at a breakfast to be held in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Convention on Jan. 11, 2010, at the Orlando World Center in Marriott, in Orlando, Fla. Rudy Ruettiger will personally present the awards.
Each finalist will be presented with a classic finalist award and have an academic scholarship made in his name to the general scholarship fund of his college or university, as well as have travel expenses paid to the event. An overall winner will be chosen and presented with the top scholarship and bronze Rudy Award trophy.
Flores is the only player from a Utah school and is one of four players from the Western Athletic Conference nominated, joined by Phillip Knight of San Jose State, Luke Lippincott of Nevada and Jamar Cotton of New Mexico State.
Flores, is 5-5, 165 pounds, and is the fifth string running back on the team. Flores is a native of Logan, Utah (Logan HS) and walked on at USU with dreams and aspirations of playing for the Aggies. From his freshman year to his junior season, Flores was a walk-on and has been the epitome of hard work and desire. Knowing he would probably never break the ranks to have a shot at playing in a game, he continued to service the first team defense as a scout and worked hard during two seasons and three spring ball sessions. Flores never complained or muttered any words of quit the whole time he has been at Utah State. His one wish has always been to "do what is best for the team."
This fall, Flores proved to be one of the most dependable players on and off the field. He didn't break the ranks to play running back in a game, but he started on multiple special teams units. Having put in his time and effort to serve the Aggie football team with knock out effort, Flores earned a scholarship and was put on full aid this fall. He continued to serve the first team defense as a scout running back and continued to play with fanatical effort on every special teams down that he was in the game, finishing with five special teams tackles and one forced fumble.
Finalists will be announced on Dec. 16 and listed on www.CollegeRudyAwards.com.
