Huot Claims Medalist Honors To Lead Aggies To Team Title
April 13, 2004
BLACKFOOT, Idaho - Cody Huot earned medalist honors in leading Utah State to a team title at the Peterson/Von Elm Intercollegiate men's golf tournament here Tuesday afternoon. Huot's win marked the first time an Aggie golfer has won a tournament since 1996. USU's team win was also its first since 1996.
Huot finished the three-round event at four under par to beat a pair of Utah Valley State players by three shots. Huot, a sophomore from Brigham City, Utah, fired a four-under par 68 to open the tournament and then followed that with two straight rounds of even-par 72 to get the win.
He was the first Aggie medalist since Todd Tanner claimed the Stevinson Rannch/Stanislaus Invitational in October of 1996. The Aggies won that tournament as well, beating New Mexico State by five shots.
USU finished four over par as a team to beat UVSC by four shots. Idaho State's number one team was 29 over par, while ISU's second team was 63 over par in the four-team event.
Jason Blair, who played in just his third tournament of the season, was one-over par for the tournament and finished fifth with a score of 217. Brett Black shot a 72 on the final day and his 221 total was good enough for ninth place. Devin Daniels sandwiched a three-under par 69 in between two rounds of 77 and placed 10th at 223, seven over par.
Jake Blair opened the tournament with a 72 but followed with rounds of 75 and 77 to shoot 224 and tie for 11th place. Ryan Worthy, who was playing in just his second tournament for USU, played as an individual and finished 16th at 229.
The Aggies will travel to Provo, Utah to compete in the BYU Cougar Classic on April 23 and 24. USU will then close its spring season at the Big West Champions in Santa Margarita, Calif., April 26-27.
