Utah State Golfer Seokwon Jeon Wins Utah Invitational In Leading Aggies To Second-Place Team Finish

For the second time in as many events, Utah State had an individual claim a tournament championship as Seokwon Jeon shot a 3-under par 68 during his final round Tuesday and won a two-hole playoff to claim medalist honors at the Utah Invitational held here at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club. Overall, Jeon finished the tournament with a collegiate-best 7-under 206 (67-71-68).
Utah State finished the Utah Invitational tied for second-place out of nine teams with a 21-over 1086 (355-259-372) as teams were allowed to compete six players and count five scores. Boise State won the tournament title with an 11-over 1076 (364-356-356) and UTEP tied USU with its 21-over 1086 as the Miners had team rounds of 352, 367 and 367.
Jeon, who defeated Boise State's Ty Travis in a two-hole playoff, becomes the second Aggie golfer in as many events to win a tournament as current senior Tanner Higham won the Boise State hosted Dash Thomas Memorial with an 8-under 205 (71-67-67) in the team's last competition on Sept. 24, 2013.
The last time an Aggie golfer won medalist honors prior to this season was back in 1996 when Todd Tanner carded a 3-over 147 (77-70) to win the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stanislaus, Calif.
Jeon (Salt Lake City, Utah) began the Utah Invitational by tying his collegiate low round with a 4-under 67 during his first 18 holes Monday, followed by an even-par 71 during his second 18 holes. Jeon then fired a 3-under 68 during his final round Tuesday to get into the two-hole playoff. Overall, Jeon now has three top-10 finishes in four tournaments this year.
Higham (Shelley, Idaho) finished the Utah Invitational tied for 11th-place with a 2-over 215 (70-72-73), while sophomore Brennan Coburn (Layton, Utah) finished tied for 26th-place with a 6-over 219 (71-70-78), which is also his collegiate-best 54-hole score. During his second round Monday, Coburn carded a 1-under 70 for his best-ever collegiate round.
Utah State junior Grahm Schmaltz (Kalispell, Mont.) finished in 35th-place with an 11-over 224 as he tied his collegiate-low round of 70 during his first 18 holes Monday, before carding a 7-over 78 during his second round of the tournament and a 5-over 76 during his final round. Freshman Braxton Miller (Boise, Idaho) tied for 42nd with a 16-over 229 (77-75-77) and fellow freshman Dylan Cramer (Bend, Ore.) tied for 52nd-place at 21-over 234 (81-71-82) as his even par 71 during his second round Monday was also a collegiate-best.
Utah State will conclude its fall schedule on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 27-28 when it travels to Simi Valley, Calif., to compete in the Cal State Northridge hosted Bill Cullum Invitational.
