Utah State's Tanner Higham Named Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week For Second Time This Year

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State golfer Tanner Higham has been named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 17, in an award that is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the second time this year and third time in his career that Higham has received USU student-athlete of the week honors.
Higham, a junior from Shelley, Idaho (Shelley HS) finished in a three-way tie for first-place with a 2-under 142 (70-72) at the Southern Utah hosted Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational last week helping Utah State tie for sixth overall with a team score of 18-over 594 (298-296). After finishing regulation tied for first, Higham played in a three-way playoff for medalist honors, but dropped out after bogeying the fourth playoff hole. Higham remained in the playoff after holing a 50-yard chip to make par on the previous hole.
For Higham, it is the first time an Aggie golfer has tied for first or won a tournament since the fall of 1996 when Todd Tanner won medalist honors after carding a 3-over 147 (77-70) at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stanislaus, Calif.
On the season, Higham has played 17 rounds and has a team-best scoring average of 73.18. Along with tying for first at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational this past week, Higham also finished second at the U.S. Air Force hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational last fall as he shot a 6-under 210 (70-70-70) for USU's best individual finish at the time since 1997.
Utah State golf is currently playing its second of three rounds at the Cal State Fullerton hosted Folino Invitational in City of Industry, Calif., on Monday, Feb. 18.

MEN'S BASKETBALL - Junior center Jarred Shaw (Dallas, Texas) helped Utah State to a 1-1 home record last week with a 73-69 win against New Mexico State and a 63-60 overtime loss to Denver. Against the Pioneers, Shaw had 18 points and nine rebounds in a career-high 40 minutes, as he was 8-of-12 (.667) from the field and 2-for-6 (.333) at the free throw line. Against NMSU, Shaw scored 24 points to go along with eight rebounds, two blocked shots and one assist, as he was 11-of-18 from the field and 2-for-3 at the free throw line. For the week, Shaw averaged 21.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.0 blocked shots and 0.5 assists per game, while shooting 63.3 percent from the field (19-30) and 44.4 percent at the free throw line (4-9).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Senior guard Devyn Christensen (Caldwell, Idaho) helped Utah State to a 1-1 road record last week with a 92-89 double overtime win at Denver and a 106-94 loss at New Mexico State. Against the Pioneers, Christensen scored 21 points to go along with two rebounds, one steal and one assist, and made the game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left in the second overtime. Against DU, she shot 6-of-17 from the field (.353), 4-of-9 from three-point range (.444) and was 5-for-6 at the free throw line (.833), while playing a career-high 40 minutes. Against NMSU, Christensen scored 23 points to go along with seven rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, while shooting 7-of-21 from the field (.333), 5-of-14 from three-point range (.357) and a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. For the week, Christensen averaged 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.5 steals per game, while shooting 34.2 percent from the field (13-38), 39.1 percent from three-point range (9-23) and 90.0 percent at the free throw line (9-10).
GYMNASTICS - Freshman Kinzey Martinez (Kimberly, Idaho) helped Utah State to a second-place team finish in a tri-meet at San Jose State and with Brown last weekend as USU scored a 192.225. Martinez earned her fourth consecutive event win during the meet as she claimed the bars title with a career-high 9.875, along with tying for second on vault with a career-high tying 9.825. Martinez also made her season debut on beam, notching a 9.725 to tie for sixth-place.
SOFTBALL - Junior outfielder Rachael Hunsaker (Honeyville, Utah) hit .273 (3-11) to go along with an RBI double, a run scored and a base on balls last weekend at the Arizona hosted Hillebrand Invitational as Utah State lost to Southern Utah (6-4), Purdue (2-1), Nebraska (9-0), Drake (5-0) and to the host Wildcats (13-1). Hunsaker began the tournament by going 1-for-3 with a walk against SUU and scored a run. She was also 1-for-3 against the Boilermakers and ended the tournament going 1-for-2 with an RBI double against the 16th-ranked Wildcats.
MEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore Curran Wearmouth (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) posted a 1-1 singles record and a 1-0 mark in doubles play as Utah State went 1-1 at home last weekend with a win against Mesa State (7-0) and a Western Athletic Conference loss to Idaho (7-0). Against the Mavericks, Wearmouth posted a straight sets win at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0), and teamed with junior Andrew Whiting for an 8-2 win at the third doubles position. Against the Vandals, Wearmouth lost in straight sets at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-0).
WOMEN'S TENNIS - Sophomore McKenzie Davis (Salt Lake City, Utah) won her only match last week as Utah State lost to Boise State at home, 5-2. In singles play, Davis posted a straight sets win (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 1 spot and then teamed with senior doubles partner Jaci West at the first doubles position and led 6-5 before the match was called.
2012-13 Utah State Athlete of the Week Winners
