USU's Tanner Higham Tabbed WAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
Feb. 19, 2013
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State golfer Tanner Higham has been tabbed the Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17, announced by the league office Tuesday.
It is the first time in his career that Higham has received WAC Athlete of the Week honors, while also marking the first time an Aggie has won the award since Andrew Paulson garnered the honor on March 7, 2012.
Higham, a junior from Shelley, Idaho (Shelley HS) finished in a three-way tie for first-place with a 2-under 142 (70-72) at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah last week, helping Utah State tie for sixth overall with a team score of 18-over 594 (298-296). After finishing regulation tied for first, Higham played in a three-way playoff for medalist honors, but dropped out after bogeying the fourth playoff hole. Higham remained in the playoff after holing a 50-yard chip to make par on the previous hole.
For Higham, it is the first time an Aggie golfer has tied for first or won a tournament since the fall of 1996 when Todd Tanner won medalist honors after carding a 3-over 147 (77-70) at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stanislaus, Calif.
On the season, Higham has played 17 rounds and has a team-best scoring average of 73.18. Along with tying for first at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational this past week, Higham also finished second at the U.S. Air Force hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational last fall as he shot a 6-under 210 (70-70-70) for USU's best individual finish at the time since 1997.
Utah State golf is currently playing its final of three rounds at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Folino Invitational in City of Industry, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
