Utah State Golfer Braydon Swapp Earns Medalist Honors at Utah State Amateur
Three Aggies qualified for match play at the Utah State Am, including Braydon Swapp, who claimed medalist honors.

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State golfer Braydon Swapp earned medalist honors at the 119th Utah State Amateur Championships after finishing with a two-day total of 9-under 133 during stroke-play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday.

Swapp, who will be competing in his junior season at Utah State beginning this fall, edged out BYU’s Patrick Fishburn, the defending State Am champion, by one stroke for the medalist honors.

Swapp opened the 119th State Am by shooting a 3-under 67 at the Ogden Golf & Country Club on Monday. The native of Ogden, Utah, then fired a 6-under 66 at Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base on Tuesday.

During stroke-play qualifying, Swapp recorded a total of 13 birdies as he played the par-3s at 1-under, the par-4s at 3-under and the par-5s at 5-under.

Fellow Utah State golfer Andy Hess tied for 11th in stroke-play qualifying with a 3-under 139. He shot a 1-over 71 on Monday at Ogden Golf & Country Club, then followed that up with a 4-under 68 at Hubbard Golf Course.

For his two days of stroke-play qualifying, the native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, tallied nine birdies as he played the par-3s and par-4s at even, and the par-5s at 3-under.

Another Aggie to advance to match play was Chase Lansford. The native of Colleyville, Texas, tied for 51st in stroke-play qualifying with a 3-over 145. He shot 5-over 75 on Monday at Ogden Golf & Country Club, then battled back with a 2-under 70 at Hubbard Golf Course on Tuesday.

Utah State’s Brock Stanger did not qualify for match play after finishing stroke-play qualifying at 6-over 148, three shots off the cut.

Match play began Wednesday morning with the Round of 64 at Ogden Golf & Country Club. As the top seed, Swapp is taking on 64th-seeded Nathan Wunderli, while 13th-seeded Hess is squaring off against 52nd-seeded Mitchell Schow, Jr., and 57th-seeded Lansford is playing eighth-seeded Ryan Brimley.

Rounds of 32 and 16 will take place Thursday, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals Friday. The final two golfers standing will play a 36-hole championship match Saturday.
