LOGAN, Utah - Utah State golfer Braydon Swapp is the last Aggie standing at the 119th Utah State Amateur Championships.

The junior-to-be at Utah State advanced to the quarterfinals of the State Am after winning both of his matches on Thursday at the Ogden Golf & Country Club. Swapp, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, opened the day with a 2 and 1 victory over 33rd-seeded Robert Mitchell. He then ousted 16th-seeded Kenny You, 2 and 1.

“It was a lot of golf, but as long as you stay mentally strong, it’s manageable,” Swapp said of his grueling matches. “Plus, my caddie, Matt Jarmin, has done a great job on the bag and keeping the rounds enjoyable.”

In his first match, Mitchell was 3-up following the first four holes, but Swapp squared the match on the 12th hole and went 1-up on the 14th. He never looked back after that.

“I knew that if I could make some birdies I could come back,” Swapp said. “He was playing very conservatively off the tee and was just playing to make pars. Also, I’ve dominated the back nine this week.”

Swapp never trailed in his match against You as the native of Ogden, Utah, won the first two holes. You battled back to square the match on hole No. 9, but Swapp parred the par-4 10th to win the hole and he never relinquished the lead from there.

“Kenny You is a great player,” Swapp said. “He is very talented and we had a really back-and-forth match. The best part of that match for me was that I finally started a round strong.”

Two other Aggies, Andy Hess and Chase Lansford, were both eliminated in the Round of 32 on Thursday. Kyler Dearden ousted Hess in 19 holes, while Tanner Taft defeated Lansford, 1-up.

Swapp will now take on Taft, the No. 25 seed, in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:30 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals will both take place on Friday and the final two golfers left standing will play a 36-hole championship match Saturday.

“Tomorrow, I need to get off to a good start and make sure I hit a lot of fairways and greens to keep the stress down,” Swapp said.
